No more net neutrality

The digital age began about 40 years ago with the invention of the first personal computer. Then a decade or so later the internet and worldwide web were created. The digital age is also referred to as the information age because of the fact that one can learn about anything on the internet now. The amount of raw data and sheer information that is available via the internet is almost endless. Almost anyone who has internet access can share information whether it is through a blog or other means. These blogs created by students will have the same internet traffic as the websites of major corporations and this is especially due to net neutrality.

Net neutrality is the ability to have an open and free internet. Many have compared net neutrality to the first amendment of the internet and the new media age. Personally, I am for net neutrality and can’t really see how anyone is opposed to it. Net neutrality allows everyone and equal opportunity to have a voice on the internet. Without it, then internet service providers would have a complete monopoly over the internet. They could charge certain corporations more and speed up their internet channels so it’s much faster. And for the people that can’t afford it, can’t afford a voice. This is due to the fact that their blogs and websites will be slowed down and contain more internet traffic.

  1. With the election of Donald Trump, who has said that he opposes net neutrality, the topic has recently been coming up in the news again. Since Trump will be taking office, it is highly likely that republicans will take over the FCC. That means that they will attempt to deregulate. The deregulation will help large telecomm companies because they will be able to merge more easily. However, it could be terrible for the users. If there is no more net neutrality, ISP’s could charge more to access certain sites or slow down certain people’s access. The removal of net neutrality by the Trump administration could be catastrophic for the whole internet community, and could greatly decrease our access and right to free speech. It would let the large ISPs to control what we see and where we go on the internet. In my opinion this would be horrible. Of course, Trump could always decide to stray from the republican party and keep regulations in place. But just the fact that we don’t know exactly what the administration is planning to do about net neutrality is deeply disturbing.

  2. This post was extremely shocking to me when I read it. Net neutrality is something that everyone takes advantage of every day. I am willing to bet that at least half of the internet users are unaware of net neutrality in which they use the internet. The internet should continue to a neutral platform. Money hungry companies will be able to monopolize the internet and raise rates on millions of people. For some people, no net more net neutrality could mean no more internet. If ISPs are essentially controlling the internet and requiring people to pay higher rates, then the Internet could become an expense that people would do without. Less people using and being connected to the internet because of no net neutrality could really damper the idea of the Internet of Things in the near future.
