Alpha Go shows how AI will conquer the world.

Do you know what is Alpha Go? This is an AI (Artificial Intelligence) system what using deep mind algorithm. Until now the Baduk which is Asian board game as like Chess is known as only person’s game. Because there are a lot of possibilities to win and this game needs the aspect of seeing the whole. Also, it needs a creative thinking as forecasting future rather than focusing on the present. That is why old computers what we used are hard to win a Baduk player because the computer just focusing on the present’s calculation and present’s situation. However, the when computer using AI software as named AlphaGo it dramatically changes the Baduk’s domain. Almost Baduk players are defeated from AlphaGo so now 4th place on the World Baduk ranking.

How the AlphaGo is different from the other Baduk software programs? The main difference is using Deep learning system. This deep learning system uses Monte Carlo tree search which expanding the possibilities as simulating the situations. This system can apply in the game how to decide the best choice as thinking deeply and logically. In addition, AlphaGo collects the data, which gathered from the other Baduk players. It is not only learning the new possibilities but also improving the Monte Carlo tree’s abilities. As based on this search, AlphaGo takes four steps (selection, expansion, evaluation, and back up) of deciding the decision. Sometimes it looks fun but this game changer shows how AI will conquer the world instead of people. Because this algorithm can apply any other area.

  1. Baduk game is an ancient Chinese board game and attracts a large population in Asia. I have been following the game results during the summer and surprised by how Alpha Go can actually beat the topnotch players in the world. It is definitely a trend in the future for AI to become involved in different realms. Although it has its potentials, I still believe it comes with shortcomings. Even if AI has developed to perform as close to human being as possible, at the end of the day they are still machines. Without battery or electricity, they merely become futile. AI also creates potential problems like unemployment and thus make people lazy. It is also controversial in moral standards and creative thinking when AI is implemented. Imagine that one day you play Baduk or any other game with a carefully calculated “metal brain”, I believe the lack of human interaction and human creativity will surely become a huge disadvantage to AI technologies.

  2. It is definitely interesting to see how something like AI has become a far fetched idea 15-10 years ago to now possibly becoming part of our everyday lives, so much so that the United State Government this past May has formed a special AI Caucus to inform and educate government officials and law makers about AI and the future of it. They will try to highlight the benefits that AI will bring to the country economy, since AI will begin to produce a more efficient economic environment due to less human error. With the government now getting involved, this shows that now more than ever that AI and its impact on us may not be in the far future but in the near future.

  3. The AlphaGo definitely shows us that AI is going to be a big part of the future. However, seeing that the AlphaGo is only apart of a Chinese game called Baduk makes me think that engineers are still a ways away from creating something that could be used in our houses. The Amazon Echo is the closest thing we have to AI, but that only gives you information when asked, turns of music, and turns on lights. I am definitely looking forward to something that blows the Amazon Echo out of the water. It is definitely going to come, but the only question that remains is “When”?
