Samsung’s New Service Will Unite All of Its IoT Devices

Samsung has just recently released that they are attempting to combine their various Internet of Things service all under a single device called the Samsung SmartThings Cloud. The company announced this exciting news today officially at the 2017 Samsung Developer Conference. In the past, Samsung has used multiple Internet of Things devices such as platforms like SmartThings, Samsung Connect, and ARTIK. Once the Samsung SmartThings Cloud is released for purchase, this will unite all of those products.

As we’ve learned in class, the IoT is growing at a rate that is now outnumbering humans by the end of this year. This SmartThings Cloud will work with both Samsung devices and other third-party products. Samsung’s goal of this Cloud is to provide a connected consumer experience that is innovative and versatile, building one of the world’s largest IoT environments.

Samsung has reported that more information about the SmartThings Cloud will be released in the near future, and consumers will be able to purchase the device early next year.

  1. The Internet of Things is already here. One thing I am interested to see happen is how will the people who have smart devices by multiple different companies be able to “connect” their devices together. Or was this attempt to make a “cloud” am incentive to its consumers to buy more of their products. Cloud computing is one of the high demand computing process that a lot of companies are trying to get their hands in. According to this article 75% of cloud users would pay a premium for enhanced cloud compatibility. I feel as if it is a race for companies like Samsung and Apple to create the best and strongest cloud services because its obviously want the consumers want. But with the increase in demand it has still been hard for companies to create the perfect cloud because of how susceptible they can be to hackers just like Apple cloud hack a couple years back. I’m very interested to see how Samsung will execute their plan.

  2. This idea of Samsung combining their Internet of Things devices all under a single device that is called SmartThings Cloud is extremely exciting. In the article, that I found it says that “according to the technology experts at Gartner, in a little more than two years, there will be 20.4 billion connected devices in the world”. This means that, although most people think living in a world controlled by the IoT is far into the future, it is much closer than we may think. I think that one of the reasons why people are hesitant about living in a world controlled by the IoT is because they think they will have to keep track of multiple different devices and that it would be more of a hassle than helpful. However, the Samsung SmartThings Cloud would make it easier for people to control different aspects of a smart home through one single device ranging from security and locking the garage door to adjusting the thermostat. This device would also allow for a wide range of other kinds of devices to be connected. Overall, I think that a device like this is needed in order to get people on board with living in a world controlled by the IoT. People today often look for devices that will improve their lives and make regular tasks easier to complete. This device would be able to do that. I am interested to see how soon this technology starts to become part of my everyday life and how my life will improve as a result.

  3. I believe that Samsung SmartThings Cloud is a great innovation but is it necessary? From my understanding of the Samsung IoT platforms, SmartThings and SmartConnect are already connected together because SmartConnect acts as a remote for SmartThings.
Aside from making the average consumers’ lives slightly more convenient, what other uses is the availability of SmartThings Cloud? I don’t believe that we have so many devices and difficult tasks as a part of living that requires the Samsung Cloud Service.

  4. I find this post interesting because we learned in class that the internet of things IS coming, it’s just a matter of when. Do you think we as a culture and society are ready for the internet of things though? I only just heard about what the internet of things was a few weeks ago, and I’m not sure I’m ready to fully embrace it yet. I wonder if other Americans feel the same way I do. Will they buy this product, or is it just too soon? Personally, I don’t have enough smart devices that I feel like I need something to related all of them. Also I feel like most people have Apple products, which I can only assume are not compatible with this device. I feel like there isn’t a current market for this product, but I am interested to see what it opens the door for in the future.

  5. I believe many companies are trying to do this as well as just Samsung. Think about the Amazon Alexa, what amazon did was find a way for you to take all your apps, put them in one, and have it give you data when you need something. For example. If you want to know the weather, you just ask Alexa, instead of checking the app on your phone. If you want to turn the lights off, instead of even getting up, you can just ask the Alexa to do it. This also is used as a speaker, but even to play music you only need to ask it to play it, you don’t need to actually click an app. It makes easy tasks even easier than they already were.
