Let’s make a deal: Could AI compromise better than humans?

This article was quite interesting because I’ve never thought about computers can compromise before. It is more common for computer to compete not cooperate and compromise. In this article, people created a new algorithm S# and they found machine compromise and cooperation appears not just possible, but at times even effective than among humans. In the study, researchers programmed machines with the algorithm and ran them through a variety of two-player games to see how well they would cooperate in certain relationships.

Also more interesting thing was the machines can speak during cooperation with human. If human participants cooperated with the machine, the machine might respond with a “Sweet. We are getting rich!” or “I accept your last proposal.” If the participants tried to betray the machine or back out of a deal with them, they might be met with a trash-talking “Curse you!,” “You will pay for that!” or even an “In your face!” It looks like they are like humans!

The goal of this project is to understand the mathematics behind cooperation with people and what attributes artificial intelligence needs to develop social skills. I think someday we and machines can cooperate together to solve some problems and it will be great!

Flying Cars: So Close, Yet So Far

According to this article for the New York Times online, the future of flying cars is much closer than we think. Many tech companies are starting to break into the engineering of getting “flying taxis” in the air – and as if that’s not futuristic enough, they hope to incorporate artificial intelligence programs for the taxis to fly themselves. The tech behind these flaying taxis is actually so promising that companies are receiving millions of dollars in investments.

The CEO of Uber, Dara Khosrowshahi, is also involved in this latest development in transportation. Working with Aurora Flight Sciences, a product of Boenig, Khosrowshahi says that he hopes to have a new flight option dubbed “Uber Air” available for the company in 5 to 10 years.

While we might have expected this latest innovation in transportation to look a lot more like a car with wings, the companies involved in these new vehicles warn not to view the taxis as “flying cars” exactly.  These companies are envisioning more of a human sized “hobbyist’s drone”; like a helicopter, but a lot more quiet and affordable.  These taxis would also be much more eco-friendly as they would run on battery power. Airbus helicopters hopes to release a “CityAirbus” aircraft as soon as 2023.

In my opinion, I think with all the technological advancements still to come aside, this is an insanely cool idea. I’m not sure how this could ever be worked out on a really wide scale anytime super soon, but I definitely think that this could work one day.  One of the greatest parts of this flying car idea is just how environmentally friendly it really is, as it’s not using up any natural gasses but running on battery life instead. In regards to Uber’s involvement in some flying taxis, all I have to say is that I’m ALL for it. I’m sure that the prices will be jacked a lot more than they would be leaving a party at 2 a.m. in a Toyota Camry – but taking a drone home after a night out? Priceless.

Robot Carpenters

Recently, researchers at MIT have created “robot-assisted carpentry”. This new AI system will make putting furniture together easier, faster, and cheaper. MIT calls this new AI system AutoSaw. AutoSaw is “made up of two parts: design software and semi-autonomous robots” (Vincent). Users of this AI system can choose from a software template what they want to make, this includes a chair, table, etc. and can choose the size and shape. This order will be turned into instructions for the AutoSaw and will saw the correct materials. The user will then put the cut pieces of wood together to make the finished product.

As of right now the AutoSaw is pretty basic and can only do a number of things. But, with more time and review of the AutoSaw it can become a more common system. The AutoSaw is still being tested and can only cu through foam, not wood yet. Maybe in the future you will see the AutoSaw cutting through other materials other than wood, for example, concrete.

This AutoSaw is evidence that you can easily fit a robot system in everyday jobs. The AutoSaw can make carpentry jobs safer and more efficient. It can cut the number of injuries if the AutoSaw was used to cut the pieces for the furniture. These AutoSaws will “improve safety and augment their skillset”, they will not be replacing carpenters. It is an advanced tool that will really help out the carpentry industry.

I find the AutoSaw to be a great new AI system that will really help improve the carpentry jobs and help carpenters. AI technology is heading in the right direction.

Skype Translator

The internet is all about connecting people. Through logging onto the internet, people can connect through instant messenger, social media, or even Skype. However, a big problem of connection is language barrier. As a first generation child, I am guilty of losing touch of my fluency of the Vietnamese language. I often have my family members who live in Vietnam message me on Facebook in Vietnamese, which I often have trouble understanding, and Google translate often has trouble translating. However, a newer feature in Skype can help demolish this problem I, and many others have.

Now, the benefit of Skype is that it is available for almost anybody around the world to download and chat with, voice call, or video call for free. Within Skype, to turn on the translator, one simply calls the other user, brings up the dialer, and toggles a translate button. This can be done within Skype messenger, or literally in a call where the call will take place real time with just a few in between breaks for Skype to translate what the user has said. The user is able to choose if they wish to have a guy or a girl voice to be his or her translator. Currently, there are nine languages Skype enables for its calls, with hopes of expanding to many more. Though there are errors from time to time, this enables users to speak to anybody across the world that may not be as fluent in a language as the other.

This technology will bring people together. Though there is value in learning a new language, this technology can help people who are in the process of learning a language, or prefer not to learn it at all, to communicate with others. The deep learning system within Skype translator is learning the different slang of other languages, to make the conversation less like talking to a robot, and more like talking to a real person. People may use this technology for business, personal, or familial reasons. Whatever reason, Skype translate does an effective job of bringing people together through technology.

Will “Water Pods” Save the Environment?

A new company, rOcean, is attempting to save our oceans by using something they call “water pods.”

Their new device, rOcean One, hit the market a few days ago and is supposedly going to diminish the need for multiple types of bottle water such as, bottled water, bottled seltzer and bottled flavor water. This device has similar qualities to an already existing product SodaStream, however, the rOcean One can hook up right to the users tap and filter the water on the spot.

The main concept of this product is to be able to purchase the device and buy the “water pods” as needed to eventually decrease the amount of plastic waste going into our oceans. The water pods are intended to be added to flavor the water after the user has filtered it. The pods are made from recyclable material and are going to be sold at most groceries stores so users can easily re-purchase more pods.

This device also has a companion app for both IOS and Android software that users can download and it allows them to track how many water bottles they have saved from using the rOcean One. I find this very interesting because this way the user is able to see real results and it will motivate them to continue to use the device. This is a very useful aspect that is unique to rOcean’s device.

I could see this product being a common household object for many in the future. The usability for this device seems very efficient and simple. I think filtering water right from the users tap will be a big part of the success of this product. Users want devices that preform useful tasks in noncomplex ways and I believe the rOcean One does just that. I would be interested in purchasing this device and trying it out for myself in efforts to reduce my plastic bottle waste.

A Power-Up Over the Competition?

As of recent years video-gamers have demonstrated that they are willing to shell out extra money for anything that may increase their overall gaming experience, like DLC (downloadable content) or those highly criticized loot boxes. Either way the video game business is a booming market and one supplement company is trying to make their mark on that industry. Boss Level Labs has created a brain supplement, GodMode,coined after an infamous video game term, which targets gamers by stating that by taking its pill, the pill will increase one’s ability in video games. The pill promotes that it can increase one’s reaction time to a staggering six to ten percent. Also, the pill can supposedly help someone think smarter and faster.

GodMode suggests that the brain supplement can perform its goals due to the ingredients the pills contain. For the most part, the supplements are made of plant and food extracts. One specific ingredient, theobromine, a common ingredient especially in tea and is suppose to help with reaction time and memory. However, even with these ingredients which Boss Level Labs believe really do aid gamers, there has been much criticism of their supplements.

One questionable detail about the supplement is that it was once promoted as FDA approved, but has recently dropped that term. Also many professors have acknowledged the existence of GodMode and doubt that any such brain supplement can cause such a drastic change in someone. There is also a concern in the amount of caffeine in the recommended dosage of GodMode, which is seventy five milligrams. This causes a concern because these seventy five milligrams is taken in one quick go. There is also, the possibility of the users just experiencing a placebo effect, where the ingredients do not actually affect the user’s performance.

As a gamer myself I instantly became interested in something that could possibly give others a legal advantage in video games. There are too many gamers using hacks to dominate competitively online in video games and perhaps the GodMode supplement could help even the odds. Gamers are always trying to find an edge over the competition too by buying certain peripherals that can help, like fight sticks. However, I am doubtful of a supplement being able to drastically improving someone’s ability. Also, as someone who stays away from drugs unless given medically, I will not be investing in a bottle of GodMode. That should not stop people though, there have been reports of people loving the bottle, its just a matter of how much one is willing to risk to become a better player.


Google Clips, a New Way to Take Videos

Google Clips is Google’s new camera, which tackles the task of helping others take video without any user input. This camera’s purpose is to constantly take video of interesting occurrences. It performs this action by Google’s training of the camera’s neural network to specify interesting moments in which the camera will then start to record. There are obviously many great benefits of this camera.

One helpful factor of having an automatic camera is that there will never be a struggle in trying to find someone else to take the video, everyone gets to be included. This should also, help create a feel of authenticity in each video. Another benefit is that it could help with capturing key moments that one could miss by trying to get a picture and then never being able to capture the moment, which will also lead to them not being able to fully participate in that memory. However, one could be hesitant of these positives due to security issues, but this actually is not much of a concern.

Google Clips will encrypt every video taken and also has the ability to clear it’s entirety of its internal storage if another phone tries to access the camera. In order to obtain the videos taken, one must wirelessly stream the videos to their phone and then download them. Also, the videos are never sent to Google, so the user has complete control on how the videos are handled. Even though there are the obvious benefits of the camera’s purpose and the privacy of the camera, there are still many negative aspects.

One major drawback of Google Clips is that the camera’s neural network training can still use some work. There are many times it can miss important moments. Also, the camera can not zoom or tilt and is meant to be stationary. Another negative is that the camera does not record sound. There are many negatives with the camera, but its not about the now that has me excited, its the future of this technology that I look forward too. I believe Google Clips is just the start of AI taking videos without user input. I believe that there could possibly be one day in which the negatives of Google Clips will be a thing of the past. Imagine a camera that automatically take pictures, but acts as a miniature drone trained to find the perfect angle of a picture and which moments to capture. Google Clips is just the start in a new direction of video taking.



Apple’s New Healthcare

Apple is now branching out more than ever. The company is launching its own primary health care clinics, calling it AC Wellness. This follows both Amazon and Warren Buffett’s push into healthcare and change. According to an article from The Guardian, AC Wellness has a goal to serve Apple’s employees and their families providing “compassionate, effective healthcare to the Apple employee population”. The AC Wellness Network is planning to open two centers, both in Santa Clara County, which is near Apple Park and Infinite Loop headquarters.

The company is hoping to provide a healthcare experience that is completely enabled by technology. Since Apple already has its Apple Watch, the company already has a health-monitoring device and a software for fitness tracking. Apple is still searching for physicians, particularly primary and acute care, physical therapists, and nurses. One advertisement for a primary care physician states the need for experience of “preventing future disease” and “preventive care”, all while using new methods of technology. Apple is trying to do everything to make a difference in the world of health care. They are also want to hire designers that could help promote healthy behavior and prevent disease.

Apple’s staff consists of over 120,000 employees. Healthcare is one of the largest costs for staff, so creating AC Wellness would reduce its outlay by bringing services in-house. According to US Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, the cost for healthcare totally $3.3tn in 2016 just in the United States. Healthcare is of course critical for businesses to gain employees, but the cost is constantly increasing. I believe that Apple’s new healthcare tool will make a difference in the healthcare world. Using technology will cut down on costs for staff for healthcare and it will decrease the cost greatly. Also technology incorporated into healthcare services is vital in our constantly changing world today.



Natural Language Processing

Last week when I was taking an Uber with my friend there was a music device that play the music that we request through our voice. For example, “Alexa, please MIC Drop, BTS” then Alexa played the song that I want! It was really cool and awesome. I want to know how they understand people’s language and do what we command. Besides this music device there are a lot of devices that use this kinds of technology.

For computers to understand what we are saying they need to be able process language like humans. This is called natural language processing (NLP) and natural

language understanding (NLU) techniques that can produce satisfying human-computer dialogs. Unfortunately, as mentioned in this article, these technologies need to be developed further to improved user experiences. Everyone has experience that the device couldn’t understand well what we said. Often we are struggling with it.

Percy Liang, a Stanford CS professor and NLP expert, breaks down the various approaches to NLP/NLU into four distinct categories: Distributional, Frame-based, Model-theoretical, Interactive learning.

  1. Distributional approaches

Distributional approaches include the large-scale statistical tactics of machine learning and deep learning. These methods typically turn content into word vectors for mathematical analysis and perform quite well at tasks such as part of speech tagging (is this a noun or a verb?), dependency parsing (does this part of a sentence modify another part?), and semantic relatedness (are these different words used in similar ways?). These NLP tasks don’t rely on understanding the meaning of words, but rather on the relationship between words themselves.

  1. Frame-based approach

A frame is a data-structure for representing a stereotyped situation. The obvious downside of frames is that they require supervision. In some domains, an expert must create them, which limits the scope of frame-based approaches.

  1. Model-theoretical

Model thoery refers to the idea that sentences refer to the world, as in the case with grounded language. In compositionality, meanings of the parts of a sentence can be combined to deduce the shole meaning.

  1. Interactive learning

It describe language as a cooperative game between speaker and listener. A viable approach to tackling both breadth and depth in language learning is to employ dynamic, interactive environments where unmans teach computers gradually.

I think by these approaches, we can improve communication between human and computers.

Samsung Improving Camera Capabilities

Samsung and Apple have been in a constant competition between their cell phones. Apple recently came out with the iPhone 8 and iPhone X however, recently Samsung announced their release of the Samsung S9 and S9+.

This phone will look a lot like the S8 with a few different appearance changes but the big deal they are making with this phone is that the camera is amazing. The back of the phone will have two lenses for different areas of viewing.

The camera is promised to detect different lightings, detect motion, turning videos into gifs to make your lock screen while all being in high definition. Samsung also announced the S9 will have facial recognition like the iPhone X along with Animoji’s (the emojis that match your facial expressions).

Samsung believes that with this camera improvement, there will be a rise in sales. I agree with Samsung in this case because pictures are such a big part of life right now. Everyone is constantly taking pictures in public or of themselves, so having a good camera is crucial to some people.

The S9 is priced to be over one thousand dollars along with the S9+. This will add to the competition with Apple but this will definitely be an upgrade for Samsung users. Samsung’s profits will increase and their technology consultant, Rory Cellan-Jones believes that this will make cell phone users go “wow!”.
