THE RANSOMWARE THAT HOBBLED ATLANTA WILL STRIKE AGAIN

In the last week of March, Atlanta had to battle a series of ransomeware attacks that almost crippled the city. Thirteen of the attacks were targeted at local government departments around the city. As a result of the attacks, people around the city were effected from not being able to pay their water bills, to limited communications. The ransomeware called SamSam is one of a kind. It’s one of the first most effect types of ransomeware attacks that have been able to cripple a large population like such. This event proves to us more than ever that technology has many upsides, but can also create chaos when put in the wrong hands. We need to be vigilant and diligent to do our part in protect ourselves from possible cyber attacks. We also need to be mindful that this problem is not going to go away anytime soon. As a society living in a technology driven world, we need to do better and take security more serious!

  1. This is a really good article. I am always interesting in reading about hack or data breach. Whenever I read something about this , most of the time people who are effected with ransomware or any other hack attacks or anything related to technology security, they do not know what is happening until the expert figure out the whole hack and explain to the people. Hacks like ransomware and other hacks are getting popular around the world and I feel like people who uses the technology on daily basis need to get educated about attacks like this in order to prevent the hacks. If people are educated and know what these things are, there would be less hacks in the world and people data would be safer. Myself was involved in a ransomware hack 3 years ago by getting my email hacked, so if people are educated, these would really reduce the hack around the world and help everyone secure their data and personal and financial information.

  2. I feel that one of the main problems with ransomware attacks is that a majority of people either; do not know how to prevent an attack or what to do when and if an attack occurs. I personally feel that, in order to prevent attacks like this, the public needs to become educated on such attacks like this in order to reduce these attacks. I say this because the first phase of a sophisticated ransomware attack to to scope out vulnerable networks and the next phase revolves around going in and exploiting the information from those networks. If we can strengthen these weaker networks, we could immediately be decreasing the risk of a threat.
