Two-factor Authentication, also known as 2FA, is an extra layer of security that is known as “multi factor authentication that requires not only a password and username but also something that only the user has on them, i.e. a piece of information only they should know or have. Using 2FA can help to lower the number of cases of identity theft on the Internet.

The reason why Facebook use 2FA to target user presumably because of money. Although the commercial behavior is opposed by the user, is there any other ways for Facebook to maintain their service without advertisement? One of the reasons why Facebook can develop fast in the past is that they provide free and convenient service for all users. It is unavoidable to loss users If they cannot find a way to balance this situation.

  1. Hi,
I believe this is an unfair invasion of privacy. Facebook should not have the right to access our personal information. Many of the ads users see on Facebook are based on what they like on Facebook, or worse their web search history. Another scary thing is how many people are unaware that the is happening. Before reading your post and then doing additional research, I had no idea how much Facebook was using our information. It is not only scary to users, it is unfair.

  3. I think it’s pretty sad how accustomed and okay we are with our lack of privacy.

During my sophomore year of high school, I read 1984, by George Orwell. I remember it was one of the only novels I actually read and didn’t completely SparkNote because I was so intrigued by the concept behind the story. The book was published in 1949 and all I remember thinking was “it’s a good thing we don’t actually live in a society like that.” Obviously, my English teacher brought up technology and how we were always being watched but I honestly thought she was just being a middle-aged English-teaach skeptic. Only recently have I come to realize how much of a Big Brother world we really live in.

Our submission to technology is growing everyday because it’s so infused into our everyday lives – into our houses, schools, and government. And honestly, I don’t see how it can be helped.

  4. Hi,
I really found very interesting your article. I’ve always wondered how and why Facebook just show me ads I might be interested in eventhough I have not search for it through Facebook. I have heard that if you search something on internet the advertisement of that thing follows you for 8 weeks making people buy that thing at the end. I also found this article on regard of your article. If you want to discover more about the 2FA app click on the link below.

I feel that being able to access some of its users personal information to target advertising is crucial to the growth of Facebook. Advertisements allow people to be able to pay no cost to use Facebook. While this may be opposed by the user, no one wants to see ads that don’t appeal to them and their interests while they are going through their social media. Much of what people see as they scroll through Facebook are ads and posts that can somehow connect to them that they may be interested in sharing with their friends/ family. However, I do feel that Facebook needs to find a way to do this without putting too much influence on the user. For example, instead of only showing democratic views in a users feed they could show both sides of a political issue so that people aren’t swayed due to bias. Facebook and other social media apps should not be used for political articles unless both angles to every story and opinion are shown so that people are given full knowledge to then form an opinion.
While it is an issue that Facebook takes personal information and watches user activity without their knowledge, it is important to look at the big picture that Facebook needs this information to be able to successfully advertise and run their business. Unless people are going to start paying to use the Facebook app I don’t see a major issue with targeted advertisements as long as both sides of every story are given.
