A wristband that can tell you if you’re too drunk to drive

This wearable alcohol sensor is going to help protect people from drunk drivers.  The wristband is called Proof and works similarly to a fitness tracker.  The band takes data from your body by reading the alcohol molecules in your skin so that you don’t have to physically type it into your phone. This product is being compared to the accuracy of Breathalyzers on the market.

The wristband will show you information about your alcohol intake and will send you a message if you are too drunk to drive.  It is left up to the person whether or not they act on the message to not drive, but it is made to try to prevent a terrible accident from occurring.

The wristband can also measure your friends drinking levels too.  The app that is synced with the band allows you to check on them if they were to decide to go out without you.  Your friends just need to invite you for you to see what their levels look like.  This could save so many lives and present serious injuries and damage.

  1. This is so interesting! It would be really cool if something as mainstream as FitBit has this capability. People might not listen, but a notification regarding high BAC’s would be another deterrent for possible drunk drivers. In class today (1/10/19) we discussed a Ralph Lauren shirt that can take note of the wearer’s heart rate, stress levels, and other notable measurements (https://www.biospace.com/article/-b-ralph-lauren-b-smart-shirt-will-measure-heart-rate-and-calories-burned-/). Should an item like this become popular, then it would be beneficial for it to also alert people of high BAC levels. An item like this, that is highly popularized on the commercial market, could help to make huge strides in the anti-drunk driving campaign. As a young person today, not drunk driving seems like common sense, but that is because it was always heavily covered in health classes in middle and high school. For older adults (or young people) who frequently drunk drive, or were never heavily influenced not to drunk drive, a wristband could be extremely useful.

  2. While I believe it is definitely a good idea to stop people from drunk driving, I personally just don’t believe will use the device. Much like the breathlyzer that prohibits your car from starting based on you BA percentage, I feel as if the common person would ignore the habit of participating in such a thing, as a feeling that they wouldn’t need it. Even though according to research done at UPenn “In-Car Breathalyzers Reduce DUI Deaths”, it is the will of the people participating that I don’t see translating over to everyday experiences.

  3. I think this wristband has great commercial value and it is a great way to prevent drunk driving. Drunk driving is extremely dangerous and irresponsible because it puts individual and other people’s safety in danger, and it is obviously a violation of law. However, drunk driving cannot be effectively prevented if individual choose to lie about his or her alcohol intake, and others cannot examine the amount of intake unless there is examination from the police or doctor. Therefore, I think this wristband provides a great solution to prevent drunk driving and allows people to pay extra attention and care to their loved ones in situations that they cannot control. I think the information of alcohol intake can also be shared with other users through the app of the wristband, so people would get immediate notices for users who exceed their drinking limit and they can pay attention to them in order to prevent any possible physical damages.
