Is AI smarter than a 5th Grader?

We all know how far AI has come in the recent years, and much of this progress is shown in the mastery of different games. From Go to chess AI has consistently beat some of the top human players. However, the Japanese children’s game of Hanabi might just prove to be too challenging for AI to master.

The challenge is that the game relies on human interaction in order to win. The premise of the game is simple, you and a partner need to play 5 cards in the correct order- and you win! The twist is that each player can see everyone’s cards except their own. This means that in order to play the right card you have to rely on you partner to give hints and gestures that lead you to play the correct card. This is why AI is having a problem with the game.

Even though AI has mastered Go, the hardest game in the world, Go is simply a game of math and strategy. However, the human aspect of collaboration and getting others to understand something without outright telling them has stumped AI thus far. Whether or not AI is truly able to mock human thought enough to ever win Hanabi is questionable. BUt even if it does, I’m not sure that it could ever ‘master’ the game.

  1. I disagree with your opinions. The term AI nowadays is just a fancy word to make it sound good. People now are assuming that AI have intelligence is a bigger misconception that AI right now is actually built by models using all kinds of machine learning and neural network algorithms that generate outputs. One insert xyz and it would output something that could be useful in certain scenario and this so called ‘AI’ cannot even explain itself why it makes this prediction which is crucial in public safety area since so many autonomous car corporations popped out in recent years. The AI car would hit a woman because it does not register her as a human rather than a plastic bag on high way. The real AI is still not happening anytime soon.

  2. In certain aspects/events, Artificial Intelligence will always have an advantage over humans. Whether it be games like chess or even video games, AI can always beat humans when it comes to these things. But when it comes to more so decision based events like time of war or even the landing on the Hudson and human based interaction, I believe humans will always have the upper hand. Humans are the ones that know what humans think and like compared to how computers/AI interact with humans. These computers are programed certain ways to do certain things and how to do them. Unless they truly start to adapt and become more “human-like” than they could possibly have a chance and understanding what humans want/know. For example, this article discussed how AI will never understand jokes like humans do. I believe this can be applied to pretty much everything when it comes to human judgement and decision making in situations that involve it. But to answer your question, I believe in this situation, no, AI cannot be smarter than a 5th grader regarding this game because it involves human interaction. If it was anything other like chess, then yes AI would be smarter than a 5th grader.
