Maker Spaces and it’s Benefits

Makerspaces allow access to society to carry out their creative ideas in not only developing technological advances but carrying through with that idea in designing a physical product.  These physical spaces are available to any member of the community in order to express their creativity. There have been many benefits to the access and use of these spaces, one of which they allow new developments and advancements to form. These advancements have been seen far from the classrooms here at Penn State, and have been put into place in modern society. According to Curiosity Commons, maker spaces have been named to be one of the major factors contributing to pre-k learning in the classrooms. “Makerspaces are increasingly being looked to as a method for engaging learners in creative, higher-order problem-solving through hands-on design, construction, and iteration” (p. 38). According to NMC (2015). I think that by adding maker spaces to young children’s classrooms bridges the gap between having a creative mindset and the new technology-oriented generation. They allow young kids to use modern technology in order to create new products, that also assist in their education.

  1. Hey all,

I agree that makerspaces are only beneficial and influential to those who participate in them. They are creative spaces and allow others to share ideas or make products with each other. A really cool addition to makerspaces is that some deliver products. This makes makerspaces more than just one physical location. Now projects can be completed outside of makerspaces, granted the tools are available. I think the idea of this “moving makerspace” can only help peoples creativity when stopping the need for travel. https://www.makerspaces.com/

  2. I think makerspaces can be extremely beneficial for not only kids but adults as well. It can help decrease the digital divide by allowing a space for opportunity and creativity to flourish for those who may not have access to certain materials and programs. People are better equipped with the tools and programs they need and that will guide them in their profession or schoolwork. Kids have a space to explore themselves and figure out their own interests. This, in turn, can help jumpstart their own success and prepare them for the future.
I think it is important for lesser developed or poorer communitites to have free, public access to these spaces so their kids and adults have the same tools and skills as those who live in affluent communities. Using technology can help forward thinking and better our society. It has the power to boost confidence and provide healthy feedback. It is critical for policymakers to understand the great demand there is for makerspaces to develop and enhance a quality education system for all.
