AI in the healthcare industry is certainly growing!

In 2017, General Electric Company (GE) declared its partnership with Nvidia and will import its 500,000 computerized tomographies into NVIDIA’s AI platform to improve the speed and the precision of physician diagnostics.

General Electric Company further stated that the import of 500,000 Revolution Frontier CT into NVIDIA’s AI platform will not only reduce the amount of radiation but will also increase the image processing speed of the computer to greatly improve the doctor’s workflow, which saves a lot of time.

The Revolution Frontier CT (Computerized Tomography) has been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). In the case of accelerated image processing, clinical testing of liver and kidney lesions is expected to lead to better results. Moreover, GE Healthcare is the first medical device vendor to adopt the NVIDIA GPU Cloud cloud platform.

According to GE’s official website, GPU-accelerated deep learning technology can be used to create more complex neural networks. Future applications include improving 2D and 4D image display, providing visualization and quantitative data for patient blood flow, and improving medical status assessment.

On average, hospitals will generate 50PB of data per year, and most of the data will not be processed or analyzed. And this is where NVIDIA comes to the rescue. NVIDIA’s AI chip will speed up the processing of this large amount of data. In addition, NVIDIA and GM will deepen the cooperation of cloud services in which GM will store some data in NVIDIA’s GPU cloud platform.

Aside from cooperating with GE, NVIDIA has also announced its partnership with Nuance Communications. This partnership allows NVIDIA’s deep learning platform to incorporate with Nuance’s imaging diagnostic AI system. In the future, 70% of radiologists across the US can share images and reports; the solution greatly improves work efficiency. As we can see from these two cooperations, NVIDIA is extremely ambitious and confident in promoting AI in the medical industry.

  1. This article sparks an interesting side to the factor of bringing AI in the healthcare industry. I feel like the partnership of GE with NVIDIA has already seemed to do wonders in the industry by providing a lot of benefits. However, I highly doubt if AI will ever be technically able to advance human beings in terms of technology in healthcare. As mentioned in this Forbes article, (https://www.forbes.com/sites/davidshaywitz/2019/08/23/ai-and-healthcare-is-the-bloom-finally-off-the-rose/#33fa385865fc), it really becomes difficult to recognize the potential and decision-making ability of human beings in terms of crisis. Hence, it always becomes a difficult choice to evaluate the ability of machines to be critically judgemental in terms of medical crisis but until then we can definitely look at the positive side of the road and make use of these AI inventions in machines to be able to benefit in assistance in the medical industry.

  2. The power and impact of Artificial Intelligence in healthcare industry can not be ignored as this post highlights positive aspects. According to the article from Forbes, Accenture predicts that the top AI applications will bring annual savings of $150 billion by 2026 (para2). Its usages not only limited to automated operations, preventive strategies, making more precise surgery and diagnosis(which is the purpose of GE and Nvidia’s cooperation), but extended to solve medical dilemma. According to Kaveh Safavi, a head of Accenture’s global health practice, this is usually called as “iron triangle”. This is the situation of three interlocking factors(access, affordability, and effectiveness) require inevitable and often negative trade-offs while improving one factor usually harms another (para5). However, by utilizing AI, we can improve all three factors together without disturbing the other because it enables to shorten the time, self-service of patients, and reduce the human labor.

Like this, application of Artificial Intelligence in healthcare industry has many benefits, but we also have to think about challenges. Lots of people have a doubt about results of AI in healthcare field, because they have anxiety about using technology without fully understand it. Therefore, in my opinion, repeated verification of technology and sharing it with patients is necessary for development.

  3. This is an interesting article as I also wondering what can AI apply to the industry. Before I read this post, I never expected a hospital can have so much connection with technology. I thought hospital and doctors are more traditional, but I was wrong. Doctors are more like engineers now. They need to learn and rely on technologies to help them accurately diagnose a patient and give him or her the most suitable treatment. Thus, the efficiency of technology in a hospital has become more and more important. I am exciting to hear the news that General Electric Company (GE) has the partnership with Nvidia company. Both of them are technology providers in the industry, and they are both familiar to me. I like to travel by taking airplanes, and a lot of airplanes use GE’s engines. Also, I use Nvidia’s graphics card on my computer, which is currently the biggest GPU provider in the market.

I believe the partnership between these two companies will be innovative and competitive. Nvidia provides its GPU with high processing speed, and GE can utilize this high processing capability on their hardware. As you mentioned in the post, saving even a small amount of time could be tremendous to a hospital since in the hospital time can be life or death.
