How Technology is Helping the NFL

As technology improves in business, it improves in entertainment just as much. The NFL has made great leaps toward making itself one of the best entertainment services in the world. New technologies like the development of an algorithm that can help prevent injuries. It’s new technologies like this that can not only make the NFL a safer place for the people in it, but can also make the company more profitable.

Another great new innovation that is taking root in the NFL is the development of new helmets. Concussions are a very big deal, especially in a contact sport like football, which is why it is so important that new technology is helping prevent these injuries. The NFL just announced last month that they would be donating funds to certain innovators in order to develop safer helmets for the players. I think that this is huge for not only the NFL, but also for college and high school athletes. Technology that can make people’s lives safer is a great thing.

  1. Many people know about how technology is helping reduce the number of concussions in the NFL and football overall, but in terms of the rules and enforcing them, it is more fair now than ever. Replays are at an all time high in terms of their ability and the technology behind them in all NFL games. There are more cameras on the field catching never before seen angles and they are making the game more and more fair as the right call is hindered by the clear, slow motion replay of these high level cameras. Now, the call is still up to the refs, so there is room for flaws and wrong calls, but overall, the refs and the crowd/viewers are subject to the perfect angles almost every time to decide calls. One example is the pylon cameras, a couple years ago they started experimenting with high tech cameras on the goal line to decide touchdowns, an important call in NFL games. Now, every game has these cameras at both end zones to help the refs decide these crucial calls. Yes, technology is improving the safety of the game, but its also giving the refs/viewers the best possible angles to help these games become more fair.

  2. It’s great how technology can have such a positive impact on industries beyond just business. The possibilities are limitless. The effects are already seen in fields like healthcare, education, science, and much more. Football is something that does not immediately come to mind when talking about technology and innovation, yet here we see a prime example of it making huge changes in the way things are done. Even in something as basic as the world of agriculture, technology has had a huge impact. This article by Newswire talks about how AI is currently changing the way farming is done, which is something I never would have expected. When I hear AI, I think of customer service and business ideas, but in this case the AI is helping farmers with predicting crop yields and risk management. And I’m sure AI is probably being used right now in the NFL in some way too, and within the rest of the athletic and certainly the entertainment communities.

  3. Technology smashing with the NFL sounds like a good idea. Finding new technology to prevent football players from having an concussion is good. This will put a big impact on football players, and allowing younger players to play without parents worrying about safety. Technology is building to better people , and people are looking forward to watch some good hits with football. So, being able to do that we have to be safe and with the advance technology we have their should be some good process coming along.

  4. The tesla truck is trying to compete with cars outside its price range. Most people who buy truck usually buy from the same car company again. They need to fix their price strategy to see if the truck is profitable because at is current stage its not

  5. Some teams have used technology in other, less traditional ways to bring fans a more enjoyable experience. For example, the San Francisco 49er’s Levi’s Stadium is viewed as “one of the most technologically advanced stadiums in the NFL” (NFL Technology Preview: How the Game is Evolving, 2018). This is because the stadium boasts hundreds of miles worth of fiber-optic cable, and over a thousand wifi access points, so that the countless fans can use their phone to order food to their seat, or check the estimated wait times for the closest bathrooms. In a more broad sense, every NFL team has their own app to deliver important news right to fans, creating a more connected and personal relationship with their fanbase. Technology is improving in every sector of human civilization, and the NFL is no exception to this trend.

  6. Data collection in sports is becoming increasingly important. Not only is technology helping NFL players be safer, wearable devices can collect data for the purposes of training players and decision making. By analyzing data collected from the game itself, such as scores and assists, as well as information about each individual player, we can form reliable predictions that will be useful during stressful moments, such as when a coach or player must make a split second decision about a play. This data collection is also useful when it comes to broadcasting and for those who bet on games. An issue with data collection in sports is ownership of the collected data. The information is useful and valuable, therefore making it highly desirable.

  7. Although technology isn’t what first comes to mind when we think NFL, it actually plays a huge role in football. According to Matt McLaughlin at BizTech, “In recent years, teams have been using RFID sensors from Zebra Technologies in players’ shoulder pads to measure and track data about player movements and impact” (“NFL Technology Preview: How The Game Is Evolving”, 2018). Therefore, technology doesn’t just help prevent injuries as you mentioned, but it also allows the NFL to collect data about players. This got me wondering if our football team is using the RFID sensors mentioned in the article I found. I never thought about the impact of technology on the NFL prior to this post, but I find it interesting to see how technology plays a role in many aspects of our lives, even when we don’t realize it.
