While the Coronavirus spreading now and many states have ordered its citizens to stay at home, social media seems to be the only way for family and friends to stay with each other during this special period. During the last few weeks, from Chinese to Italian to American, people seem to dig out so many potentials of social media that we never know before.
For example, for you can no longer go to a movie theatre and watch the shows, under the tag #IsolationFilmClub, a movie is selected every day by a nominated user, anyone can join and watch it, and talk over it under the tag.
For those who want to work out from home, the blogger Big Kitchen Disco holds an online dance club for people to dance together in their own homes with the help of social media.
People also create art together, on social media, as wrote by Carson Ellis“I’m thinking of ways that we can stay connected here through art.”What this illustrator does is, she post an assignment on her account every day, for people to found art and create art with what they have during the isolation. There are already more than 700 people who responded the artist’s first assignment.
With all these, I feel very mixed feelings, before the coronavirus happened, I always hear the critics over the overuse of social media by the young generation. But now, social media are really bringing people together in the case that we cannot meet in person.
Some governments around the world have decided that the best way to avoid Corona Virus from spreading is by punishing those who break the rules and monitoring people. Technology nowadays makes it simple to monitor people all the time like we saw in class with the example of China were people received or got points removed for their behavior in public places. Governments can rely on sensors and powerful algorithms that make monitoring the population possible.
With this epidemic, China has taken advantage of this technology to monitor people’s smartphones, using face-recognition software and allowing people to check and report their body temperature and medical condition so that authorities can identify suspected coronavirus carrier, track their movements and identify people they came into contact with. There are also mobile apps that allow people to get notified when they are close to infected patients. Other countries like Israel have also started doing something similar to this in order to help reduce the virus from spreading. Yuval Noah Harari mentions in this article that governments may use this opportunity to implement this surveillance technology for good which will potentially allow them to use our biometric data to know more about us and therefore be able to sell us anything they want or convince us to about voting for a certain politician.
I certainly believe that the pros of using this technology today outweigh the cons because it can certainly be used to reduce drastically the spreading of the virus. The problem will certainly be when this whole situation is over that governments or corporations do not take advantage of this for their own benefit. Recently in class we got to know more about the types of Immersive Experiences that are available and how they are being used in many ways. For example one can use VR or 360 degree videos to create a video experience about the Penn State marching band to make recruiting people easier. Another example that was mentioned was in Disney theme parks how they have immersive experiences even when you are waiting to get on a ride to keep the people entertained.
Disney’s most recent use of immersive experience is the application of VR technology to have their rides available to the public in their youtube channel. I find this very creative of their part especially because they are taking advantage of the current situation instead of not doing anything. They have almost every ride from their parks available and they catch all the journey with 360-degree cameras that are shot from inside the cart itself to make a more realistic experience. I believe other businesses could benefit by using these type of technologies to advertise products, services or events. Another example of how Virtual reality is being used while people are obligated to keep social distance is the Virtual Vive Ecosystem Conference (V2EC) which took place on March 19th virtually instead of being cancelled. I believe many other businesses could benefit by using these immersive experiences and now is a better time than ever to try it out. Is VR The Solution To The Impact Coronavirus Is Having On The Events Industry?
Once again, we have encountered a health issue that has caused citizens of every nation to be “re-concerned” about their health. Only 41% of people tested claim to wash there hands 3 or more times on a daily basis, with women dragging the average up quite a bit. However, now that people recognize the importance of cleanliness and sterilization we have also began to implement technology in our sanitation processes.
One company has taken sterilization to a deeper level. Blue Ocean Robotics has created a UVD robot that disperses ultraviolet light in order to kill of germs and other bacteria’s. While this does not necessarily clean the object with soap or water, it removes any harmful germs we may be worried about.
Another sterilization process companies like Blue Ocean Robotics have been trying to push forward are the robot delivery systems. They hope that this massive decrease in human to human contact will help promote cleanliness and decrease the spread of potentially harmful germs.
AI technology has seemed to fit a niche within every occupation, whether it food delivery, healthcare, cash exchanges, etc. However, one of the most important, also happens to be one we humans are poor at and that is self care. The implementations of these robots can have an unseen effect within our bodies and improve the cleanliness of the things we consume and purchase.
Since the coronavirus spread so fast and serious, many industries are influenced by the new virus. Even some big and famous companies like Apple and Microsoft, are also disturbed their plans by the virus. iPhone is the iconic product in Apple, and the production rely on the industries in China, Shen Zhen. Therefore, the whole industry chain is interrupted and the production can not meet the expectation of Apple, which absolutely brings impacts to other positions in the whole production process for iPhone.
At the same time, Microsoft also have some problems of business in China, such as the publicity and marketing of Surface and Windows software. Now there are many IT companies in China starts to suspend the whole business, and market is also shut down for a while, Microsoft cannot expect the development of Chinese business, and the loss accounts for one third in Microsoft.
And finally, the impact also appears in other small internet companies, such as Expedia, Didi, and Facebook. Especially Facebook, whose CEO Mark Zuckerberg cancelled some advertising activities and an annual F8 conference. There is no doubt that, new technology meets an acid test and different industries need to figure out the solution of these problems.
As everyone knows, the corona virus, which has been traced back to its origin in China, has spread globally and created massive issues socially and economically. China, being the world leader they are relied heavily on their advanced healthcare and AI technologies in order to track and gather where the virus may have started and where it will go. This intelligence helped prevent many more people from being infected but, its capabilities are endless and we are just starting to recognize that.
New companies like Bluedot and other competitors have began to use AI as a way to track, prevent, treat and predict outbreaks on a national or global level. These artificial intelligence sequences use social media, doctors submissions, travel logs and a multitude of other factors to help predict when an outbreak will occur. The Canadian company, Bluedots, algorithm has even been so accurate it predicted the threat of an outbreak days before the CDC or the WHO published their public warnings.
Not only can this AI help track and prevent outbreak they can also help on a more person by person level. This technology can be used to diagnose people, process claims and payments, medicine delivery and other vital aspects of the the healthcare industry. We are just beginning to see the (potential) benefits of artificial intelligence, no matter what occupation it is used in, and the advancement of the industry could have major beneficial effects for the world population, as a whole.
One of the most recent things that we looked at in class was immersive experiences, immersive experiences use technology to immerse the user in a unique experience. One example of this that I find interesting is 360 degree video. On “theprimacy.com”, they used a 3D printed object to hold multiple GoPro cameras to capture all 360 degrees around the camera without any holes in the footage. In the article it explains that the cameras’ range of views overlap so that there are no blank spots in the 360 degree field. The 360 degree field will likely have you or whoever is filming/holding the camera in the video so the article says to have fun with this aspect, it even suggested that you “blend into the scene”. In the video posted in the article the man filming is inside the car acting normal which I believe is just him acting natural in this scene. The camera placement is also crucial because this is the perspective that your audience will have of whatever you are trying to showcase in your video and the article says to choose it wisely based on what you want you audience to experience. I recommend checking out this video attached to this article, it is a pretty neat immersive experience.
An article that I found interesting this week was one from the Wall Street Journal called “Government Tracking How People Move Around in Coronavirus Pandemic”. This article was written on March 28th and discussed how the U.S. government is now heavily looking into location data that comes from mobile user’s devices around the country to aid in the fight against the novel coronavirus. It was revealed that federal, state, and local governments are obtaining this data from mobile advertising industries, not cellphone carries, in an estimated 500 cities. Their ultimate goal behind collecting this data is to learn how the virus is spreading and disclose what areas are the biggest contributors to the rapid spread. The government has told the public that the geolocation data they are collecting is wiped of any identifying information of the mobile users like their name or any other private information that comes with their phone. With the help of this data, they hope to realize what public places are still attracting crowds of ten or more that would be viewed as places for rapid spread. Knowing where the crowds are would then lead them to close these public areas such as parks and other establishments to avoid any additional contact with the virus. The article also talked about how not only would the data give them insights as to where people are congregating but also whether or not people are complying with the stay-at-home orders and county/city lockdowns. Although there is valid reasoning behind the collection of this data, a lot of privacy concerns come up with it. To me and probably the majority, the idea of the government tracking us is kind of weird and uncomfortable to thinking about, but definitely wondering what you think and whether or not this is beneficial? Also what other privacy issues do you think this could introduce?
Amazon Web Services or AWS offers cloud storage for businesses, this can be a cheaper and easier method of storage and managing data for many businesses. I heard about it a while ago but decided to learn more by visiting amazons AWS website. Basically cloud storage means that you can pay a company (such as Amazon) to manage and store your data remotely. This permits you to not have to deal with managing your own data center. This appeals to businesses because it can be very expensive and use a lot of resources like time and people to keep a data center running smoothly and securely. Technology in big data is getting more complex and the physical hardware that you would need to mange your own data base needs to be replaced every few years which gets very expensive and requires work on the business’s end. If you need more storage space, you can get it at anytime. My question though for cloud storage solutions is, how secure is your data if you let a third party such as Amazon manage it for you? According to “logicworks.com” AWS is PCI “level 1” compliant, and level 1 compliant means that AWS is very secure in terms of the payment card industry (highest level of compliance to PCI). What can you find about the security that cloud services provide?
How Secure is AWS Cloud for Retailers and eCommerce?
China has been leading the way for months creating robots to help combat the COVID-19 outbreak. Their latest invention coming from Hong Kong is a robot that helps disinfect subway cars. This robot works alongside scheduled workers that also regularly disinfect subways. It sprays a hydrogen peroxide solution around the cars and is supposed to be able to reach “hard to get” places that regular workers often miss. In Hong Kong, schools and most businesses have been closed since late January. The successful social distancing combined with the rapid generation of new technology has helped Hong Kong keep their number of cases under 200.
The use of robots in US hospitals is something that is coming very soon, if not here already. Robots in China are being used to free up the time of medical staff and reduce human interaction for simple tasks such as delivering food and taking temperatures. Thermal screening devices allow all patients’ temperatures to be monitored at once in a large database, which has been allowing hospitals to accommodate people more efficiently. I was unable to find any articles about the use of these robots in US hospitals, however I’m sure this will start to surface very soon.
