Tech Industries Coming Together to Help with COVID-19

I read the article, “Ford Joins Tesla and GM in Helping with Ventilator and Mask Supply”, by Sean O’Kane, and it was honestly heartwarming. Since most productions have ended due to the virus and causing people to be unemployed, these major tech companies are giving a helping hand to the medical community. By using their facilities to create ventilators and masks, more lives are going to be saved during this pandemic. Ford and 3M are coming together to use parts that would be used for their own products, to produce ventilators as quickly as possible, like using fans that would originally be used under car seats, and power tools made by 3M (O’Kane 2020). These companies are working at clock speed to help produce much needed supplies for this outbreak. Tesla handed 1,000 ventilators to California and also supplied masks to the University of Washington’s Medical Center (O’Kane 2020). This makes me happy to see that these companies are coming together to help the country during this horrific time. I hope to see more companies doing this as well, because there can never be enough help!

  1. Speaking of the tech industry, The Chan Zuckerberg Initiative, a charity organization Facebook CEO, Mark Zuckerberg and his wife, Priscilla Chan started, contributed $25 million to Bill Gates’ efforts towards the COVID-19 vaccine. In fact, many others like WHO, Mastercard and Wellcome are partnering with Bill and Melinda Gates to develop affordable and accessible treatments. They are hoping to study drugs already in the market to assure availability to patients. The $120 million donated so far may also be used for treatments for other viral pathogens that may become future problems.

Also, Amazon and Microsoft are employing resources to the essential businesses in communities struck by coronavirus. In addition, Facebook launched a small business aid program and Apple is donating 10 million protective face masks. A lot of the global corporate giants are coming together in other to control outbreaks.

  2. Due to the coronavirus outbreak, there is a shortage of supply. However, with the help of those Tech Industries, problems can be solved easier and quicker. I think it is necessary for those Tech Industries to corporate with other industries in order to fight against COVID-19. For instance, the 3M company can share the way to produce masks that are qualified with other companies that are capable of making masks but do not know the way to produce. All industries should work together to fight COVID-19 since the economy can get better only if the COVID-19 is overcome by people. There are numerous companies facing the challenge and it is important for all companies to work together and get through this crisis.

  3. I think that big tech companies are really taking a great step forward in helping the world with this pandemic and with new innovative technologies being researched everyday. I’m not surprised that society is coming together to help solve a common problem that is present to all people. The adaptations of these new inventions can help those who don’t have connections to health insurance identify the threat that is out there in order to keep themselves and others safe. Another aspect of these generous developments is that they are giving them out for free and not looking for any other compensation, especially since a lot of people are out of work and companies are pulling in less revenue than they usually do. An example would be google themselves “building a website to help people understand whether they should seek a test for the coronavirus, Trump said, and added that Google had committed a staggering 1,700 engineers to the project” (Newton). The website can help many people who have a basic understanding of the internet identify the signs of the disease and can counsel them into getting help from their nearest provider. The addition of it being free is what helps hundreds of thousands get the help they need.
