Expectations on the next-gen video game consoles

The 2 major video game console manufacturers Sony and Microsoft both revealed their next generation consoles. Interestingly that is going to be a very different generation. Over the past generations Sony had larger market share generally but this time the specs of PS5 revealed by them are rather disappointing. Microsoft’s Xbox Series X on the other hand has more promising hardware specs. Another interesting point to be looked at is that the prices of both consoles, although not officially announced, are expected to be way higher than the prices of past generation consoles since they are targeting towards a more high-end market with the needs for more innovative features and better hardware. Personally I do believe that the key to success in the next gen video game market can possibly be cloud-gaming. In 5 years with developed 5G technology cloud gaming might be overwhelmingly more efficient and cost-effective than hardware specs and I hope that’s an innovation the next-gen consoles and the manufacturers can adapt to. Please feel free to share your thoughts on what we know about the next gen consoles and your expectations.

  1. in my person opinion, the majority of gaming will move away from consoles and move towards pc gaming, we already see the best gamers play on pc and because of this and large gaming platforms/ tornaments are now being held on pc this is also due to the faster movement of pixels on the screen in comparison to xbox/ playstation and because of this I feel that social gaming will continue of these but higher skill and competitive gaming will move fully to pc and because of this will bring much of the innovation with it.

  2. Cloud gaming is most certainly the future of gaming. the sizes of games are getting bigger and bigger, and with the need to download games even if you have a disc is not helping the limited space on current gaming consoles. I predict that in the coming years major gaming companies like Sony and Microsoft will offer some sort of subscription that allows you to play games that you own via a high speed stream from a third party server, rather than being run on your Xbox/PS4/PC/etc. Once cloud gaming becomes the norm, I think these major companies will also start to offer something similar to Google Stadia, which allows you to play games via a stream from anywhere on any screen (granted internet connection).
It is always a big debate about whether Xbox or PlayStation is better. I am excited to see for myself the features of both new consoles. I think the new Xbox won over PlayStation in the looks category. The Xbox Series X is big, bulky, and tall; it looks like an absolute unit and almost resembles a desktop computer. The PS5’s look technically has not been confirmed, however several leaked images showing the same thing have led people to agree on what it will be.

  3. I really liked reading your write up on the next-gen consoles and I agree with the points that you made about gaming in the future. I also believe that cloud storage will be implemented into gaming with the next-gen because of how storage is right now. I have the same problem as the first comment on this post has as well. I can have only about 5-6 games download at a time on my Xbox One if even that. The storage on the Xbox One at least seems very small and I feel it could’ve been made with more no problem. I think it could all be just a business strategy and Microsoft was waiting for the next-gen consoles to have more storage so that people have another reason/incentive to buy these more expensive consoles that are coming in the future. It’s crazy to think that the Xbox One came out almost 7 years ago. Microsoft has to have made major updates to hardware and everything about the Xbox which makes sense for it to increase in price. Great post idea.

  4. The idea of cloud gaming being the key to a prosperous future in the gaming market is a very justifiable argument. If Sony and/or Microsoft can take advantage of the technology that cloud gaming presents, then profits on their next generation consoles will go through the roof. As someone who has played video games for my own life, I have always been a Playstation user, owning every single available console since the PS2. Although I have constantly been told Xbox is superior, I have defended Playstation consoles for various reasons, whether it is due to the free online account feature, or what I see as a higher quality in game selection. However, with this next generation, I know that both Sony and Microsoft are taking their consoles to the next level. According to sources, the PS5 is said to be sold at a price at roughly $399 while the Xbox One X is closer to $599, which for Playstation fans is great, but at what cost? Although you are potentially paying $200 less for PS5, is that a result of it having lower processing capabilities than the Xbox One X? As well, Microsoft is boosting a better initial selection of gaming titles that can be expected at launch, with titles such as Halo 6 and Cyberpunk 2077 leading the way for Xbox while we do not know any confirmed titles heading to the PS5 at launch. If either company can make the right investments into cloud gaming, this battle for gaming supremacy will be one for the ages. But, for the time being and taking into account the facts that are known, I am giving the edge to Microsoft and the Xbox One X.

  5. I very much agree with the idea that the next generation consoles will use cloud storage in order to store games on the consoles. I think that this is a very good idea because right now i have a 500 gigabyte Xbox One and it can barely hold more than around 6 games at a time. As we push to increase the quality of our video games, the storage capacity for each game only grows bigger. Video games on past consoles would rarely exceed 20-30 gigabytes for most of my games, but now games are rarely below 50 gigabytes of storage. I think the new innovations that are being implemented into the next generation consoles will justify the high prices of them. Video games in 2020 are now more realistic than ever. Especially with the implementation of virtual reality within video games and with this technology, more power and storage is required. Sony plans on further developing VR and hints at a second PSVR (Playstation Virtual Reality). With the current generation consoles, both Sony and Microsoft both focused on making their consoles more than just specified for video games, but rather a full entertainment system. Being able to watch live television, streaming services, watch movies, and more has shown that they are indeed more than just for video games. With the next generation consoles coming during the holiday season this year, I am excited to see what other innovations the industry will provide.

  6. I agree with you that cloud storage is the future of gaming, as new games can now take up to half of a systems storage and with new more complex games will only come more gigabytes to download. I also agree that the next gen consoles will be more expensive than previous generations. There has always been a trend that each new generation consoles is more expensive than the last, however with the PS5 and Xbox series X the high price is reflective of the innovative technology within the consoles. One such technology that is confirmed to be in the PS5 and speculated to be included In the Xbox is ray tracing. This feature creates dynamic and realistic lighting and reflection in game to such a detailed level that has never been seen before. The only problem with ray tracing is it is technologically demanding, so hopefully with next generation capabilities and new technologies, gaming could look more realistic than ever.
