Coronavirus Impact on Connectivity and Technology Industry

As we all know, the outbreak of the Coronavirus is affecting every aspect of our lives, and it has become the only thing people seem to talk about. This virus is causing the economy to shift into a recession, and it is impacting people everywhere. As a result, I realized that there would be a huge impact on businesses, and I wanted to focus on the Technology Industry. After some research, I found that several of the world’s largest technology conventions had been cancelled due to the virus, causing innovation and new ideas to halt. This is something that seems like just a small problem, but it is going to be very noticeable because we are so used to rapid development. Economic losses are inevitable during a crisis like this, and the technology industry is estimated to have lost over $1 billion in direct costs.

One impact of technology in the aiding of people during the chaos is the ability of smart technology to make identifying infected patients. For example, I read that in China, police are using drones with thermal sensors in order to show people who are running a fever. This is a wonderful benefit of technology, and it can be very productive in a time of need. We need things like this to help us prevent the spread of the virus, and we can only do so much.

  1. Technology has never been more important than it is right now. Without technology many companies would be having to completely halt business and schools would not be able to continue to teach. This can be accredited to how much the world has advanced in the last 20 years in terms of percentage of connectivity. How the world is currently running would not be possible without the high percentages of connectivity that we have.

While the economic losses are going to hurt thee overall market I do not think that canceling some of the larger technology conventions will play a role if at all in the recession of the market. These products and ideas can still be introduced virtually and I do not think missing out on a technology convention will affect a companies ability to profit off of a product or idea.

  2. I found the impact coronavirus is having on the gaming industry to be very interesting. In terms of competitive gaming, many professional leagues, including the OWL and CDL have cancelled LAN events for the near future. However, esports are unique from other competitions in that they can still be held without having to meet in person- they can compete over the internet. In a sense this is the time for esports to shine as they will undoubtedly have the largest chance for exposure right now.

In terms of casual gaming, gaming usage is up around 75% due to the stay-at-home order implemented in most places globally. With people staying indoors they are more inclined to play video games as a way to keep entertained. Also, viewership on websites such as Twitch and Youtube gaming have increased dramatically as a result of the pandemic. In fact, on Friday there were almost 1 million people watching the gameplay reveal of a new game called Valorant. Although this is a terrible situation overall, this is the time for the gaming industry to make its mark.

  3. Now more than ever people are relying on technology and the cyber security risks are more prevalent than ever. Recently, many news outlets have been talking about the trouble platforms like Zoom are having with security. In fact, many New York school districts have banned the use of Zoom due to these security issues. This phenomenon has been called “Zoombombing” and threatens the very fabric that keeps us all connected. In response to attacks, professors have been adding passwords to their chats, however greater measures need to be taken to protect the privacy of everyone in such difficult times.

  4. Yes, I definitely agree with your points regarding this unfortunate pandemic we are experiencing, but I would like to expand on you mention about the technology industry as a whole. It is true that conventions and gatherings alike have been cancelled, so this may delay some progress when it comes to new technological innovations. However, looking at this situation from a different perspective, the world of technology is actually thriving right now. In a time like this where physical human interaction is limited, think about all of the technology we are using to stay connected and communicate with each other. More than ever, people are using video chat apps, texting, spreading news on social media, and so on. Without these things, we would not be able to stay updated on the matter. In essence, I get what you’re saying, but I also feel we should take into consideration the increased use of innovative technology that is already currently being used.
