COVID-19 Effect on Travel Collected by Google

In the article I found. Google has reported that travel in major parts of our country such as retail store and transit stations. This has also had an effect of nearly half of theĀ  human population. Google is getting this data from people who have opted in to have their whereabouts being monitored through different devices such as cellphones, cameras, and smart watches.

This tool by google concerns me because if government regulation continues to broadcast stricter and stricter rules to quarantine this technology could be used to track people and be used in court to people some people behind bars for violating the stay at home orders.

  1. I could see why this is a concern but we must also realize that these people have chosen to opt in which is part of the agreement. The government should not be able to breach this privacy barrier without consent. Although in my personal experiences when working on projects with big corporations that require massive amounts of data to make a useful product it can be tricky to navigate. They want enough data for the products to be useful and accurate but do not want to seem too invasive so if Google is using the data for the betterment of society and combatting this virus I can see where they are coming from.

In terms of your concern for people getting arrested I feel that currently it is not any city’s priority to put more people behind bars in this state the country is in. In fact in Philadelphia they have tried to slow this down.
