Self-propelled powder to stop bleeding

When people get injury and bleed, they need to stop bleeding quickly. However, stop bleeding is not easy as we usually expected, and it will cause serious damages such as death. According to Christian Kastrup, an assistant professor at the University of British Columbia, he said, “Bleeding is the number one killer of young people, and maternal death from postpartum hemorrhage can be as high as one in 50 births in low resource setting so these are extreme problem.” Since he thought that traditional method of halting bleeding are not very effective, UBC researchers created the first self-propelled particles, which can against the flow of blood to treat severe bleeding, a potentially huge advancement in trauma care.

A group of researchers, biochemical engineers and emergency physicians finally develop simple, gas-generating calcium carbonate micro-particles, and its powder, releasing carbon dioxide gas, helps stopping critical bleeding. According to a group of researchers, they said that the carbonate forms porous micro particles that can bind with a clotting agent known as tranexamic acid, and transport it through wounds and deep into the damaged tissue. After studying, they made a scenario, which is similar with catastrophic event like a gunshot wound, and used particles. It proved high effective with stopping bleeding. Kastrup said, “The area we’re really focusing on is postpartum hemorrhage: in the uterus, after childbirth where you cannot see the damaged vessels but you can put the powder into that area and the particles can propel and find those damaged vessels.”

In my opinion, this self-propelled powder is an incredible creation, which definitely affect people’s lives. With more rigorous testing and development, I hope that it will be brought the agent to market so that the particles could have a wide range of uses, which are from sinus operations to treating combat wounds.

Brick-laying Robot: build a full-sized house in two days


Back in the days, people thought how their future would be. For example, they imagined that there would be phone without wire, television with 3 dimensions, car with solar energy, etc. Most of all, people thought that robots will do everything what people usually do. Recently, robots are getting smarter. Therefore, people are having many challenges to grow its improvements. One of them is bricklaying robot that can raise the brick shell of a house in two days.

Brick-laying robots are not news, but this invention, Fastbrick Robotics, is on a fully automated brick-laying robot. Mark Pivac, the engineer in Australia, invented Fastbrick Robotics. According his word, he said that this invention could work for 24 hours for 365 days, compared to human capability, which can do it four to six weeks of backbreaking work for a typical home. Furthermore, it can lay 1,000 bricks per hour and has build 150 houses for a year. With computer-controlled machinery, this technology may speed up for constructing so that it can cut the cost of it. According to Pivac, he said, “People have been laying bricks for about 6000 years and ever since the industrial revolution, they have tried to automate the bricklaying process. With CAD/CAM system’s efficiency, he believes that this robot can make a difference.

So how does it work? He uses a system, 3D computer-aided design (CAD), with laying program of a house or structure. Every location is perfectly calculated. This invention will figure out how each brick needs to be positioned and needs to be cut bricks to length.

As mentioned before, Fastbrick Robotics, also known as Hadrian, is not the first bricklaying robot, but it is a fully automated one. About detailed how it works, Hadrian does not move its vase once it starts working. It has a 28m articulated telescopic arm, which allows reaching over and around the structures building.

Now, this technology is received great significant support from government and industry parties.

In personal opinion, this invention is a great bricklaying invention, which will bring convenience and cheap cost. Since building houses is type of dangerous work, people do not have to do such things, which bring risk. Furthermore, one of the great advantages is saving time. It can build shell of a home in two days, which people can do with several weeks. Even though it has a lot of advantages, it also has negative side. First of all, it will bring unemployment, which is still a main problem in this day. Furthermore, since computer controls this invention, there is a possibility of being an error in the computer system while building the bricks. This can result in making a flawed house that can endanger people who will reside in the house.

MIT Media Lab’s shape-shifting table top

Do you like the movie Transformers? If you do, you definitely feel cool about some technologies from this movie! In the movie of Transformers, there is a technology acquired from the alien robots that transforms electronic devices into small alien robots with the power of cube. The cube in the movie inspired MIT students to make a cube robot that exactly works like the one in the movie. It can be observed from the fact that the cube robot invented by MIT students has a movement of the cube of Transformers.

This invention, Transformer desk, is led by Horishi Ishii, who leads this MIT Media Lab’s Transform project with thousands of physical, motorized “pixels” with the Tangible Media Group from the MIT Media Lab. He get involved this project because he is not only interested in physics, but also interested in IoT, internet of Thing. Transform consists of over thousand of plastic rods, and attached to individual motors. It also has three dynamic shape display that move more than one thousand pins, going up and down. Therefore, when people pass their hands over the top of table, its sensor will detect their movement with rippling like a wave with kinetic energy. According to Isshi, he said that this invention is a new form of physical and digital computational material. Furthermore, it is equivalent to the invention of new medium like painting, music, plastic, or computer graphic, which inspire viewers with unexpected transformation. According to Isshi, he believes that Transform will be a new medium with infinite possibly. Furthermore, people have to think, create, image, and respond because Digital is still not the end.

After reading this article, I truly hope that people can use this incredible invention in near future. It is exciting that technologies in movies are slowly invented so that people can use it. I am interested in this article because this invention is related with Internet of Thing, which we learned in class. Furthermore, I liked what Isshi said in the article. He said, “We present these new possibilities, which no-one ever imagined. Now people have to think, create and respond.”

Skarp Laser Razor: 21st Century Shaving

 

Many male and female are shaving, and shaving is painful. Razors are usually unwelcomed because of nicks, cuts, skin irritation, and razor burn. However, two Swedes, who are named Moran Gustavsson and Paul Binun, found a solution, which is a razor that shaves hair with a laser, not blade. This new invention is called Skarp Razor from Kickstarter.

According to the main webpage of Kickstarter, the Skarp raised $3,946,363, blowing by its funding goal of $160,000, and there are seven days left.

This Skarp razor works with a small laser, which cuts through hair without irritating or damaging the skin. There are a lot of advantages of using the Skarp razor; no scratches, no razor burn, no infection, no itch, no accidental cutting, no irritation, effortless smooth stroke, incredibly close & smooth shave, no expensive cartridge replacements, little to no water usage, no painful waxing or depilatory creams, environmentally friendly, etc. The Skarp razor is invented not only for skin, but also for the environment. There are 2 billion razors, which are being thrown away each year in the U.S. because of dangerous blades. Furthermore, there is a drought, which is severe and common issue around the world, and paying high price for water. For resolving this issue, this new invention will work.

So how does this work? Before invention, since it was difficult to find a way to cut light hair, wavelengths of light has been discovered that could cut only through dark hair. After years of research and development, Moran Gustavsson and Paul Binun discovered chromospheres, which are particles that absorb certain wavelengths of light, in the hair that would be cut when hit with a particular light wavelength.

After watching video and reading this project, I hope that this incredible invention will be shown in few years. Since its funding goal is exceeded its expectation, I pretty sure its challenges will be overcome. Overall, I like its design, which is not way different from its original razor. Therefore, we do not need a razor, but a laser.

Wearable Drone, Nixie


Do you like extreme-sports such as rock-climbing, biking, etc.? When you do extreme-sports and want to leave behind memory through pictures, how do you take a picture? Isn’t it difficult while enjoying those sports, especially without a person who can take a picture for you? Well, here is a new technology for those who have a same situation. This technology is called ‘Nixie.’

Drone is well known as Amazon drone, which is also a new technology for sending its packages through flying on the air. This new technology has been praised with a lot of convenience. In succession of Amazon, there is a new series of drone, which is called ‘Nixie.’ Basically, Nixie is a self-taken photograph from a UAV such as Parrot AR Drone 2.0. According to the article, it is the world’s first flyable and wrist-wearable camera around the world. Nixie gives creativity by allowing your arm to use it. Therefore, you can attach Nixie and launch it instantly, and it will detect your presence with flying around you. Then, Nixie will take a picture or a film your exploits like touring, rock-climbing, mountain climbing etc. It is for the moments in life when people really desire to take a picture or film of something what you are doing, but using a standard camera, what we usually have, would interrupt the moment. The Nixie drone is seemed like a giant bracelet on your wrist. However, with a simple gesture, it will unfold into a small, sleek quad copter, and it will know your presence and snap a photo or video. After taking a photo or film, it will come back to you like a boomerang, which is always come back to you. For now, the Nixie is one of the handful of finalists in Intel’s Make It Wearable Challenge, which is a competition for a future wearable technology. The winner of the challenge will be awarded a $500,000 cash prize iron, and its project will make into a reality.

Since I am a person who is interested in extreme sports, Nixie drone will be useful for leaving memory behind in my life. Furthermore, it will prevent some accidents, which happen when people are trying to snap a picture while doing sports and activities.
