Information Technology applications in Food Industry

Food might be the most essential in our life, and it directly makes an influence on the environment and also on society. To prevent unexpected fluctuations in the supply of resources, various type of technologies are used in companies in the food industry. It not only benefits the producers but the consumers, we, can also profit from these technologies.

Ferrero, producer Nutella, are using the Food Computer developed by Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) which tells the plant’s needs and controls the environment in a lab for it to grow as healthy plants for the products. Through this technology, producers can grow the ingredients without excessive efforts and also be able to find adequate regions to grow the most nutrient ingredients. Even though it does not directly affect the procedures of making a complete product, it surely shortens the time and reduces the cost in fundamental aspects, and these saved resources can be used to in progress of making better products.

For consumer aspect, a company Apeel Sciences created Edipeel which is an edible coating on fruits and vegetables that made of leftover grape pulp from the winemaking process. This coating can make the fruits to be fresh 3 times longer, which allows consumers to have fresh fruits as long as they put it on the table. This technology can also allow producers to ship by ship which was unavailable due to limited preservability, making it cheaper to consumers.

How AR technology affects the entertainment media

doppler labs here oneThe trend of entertainment is under grand shifting stage due to Augmented Reality which let us be more interactive with things we usually access to. We are already familiar with AR/VR games, and it is already quite widely spread than other forms of entertainment.

In the aspect of the film industry, VR movies are, and several film festivals are holding the awarding sectors for VR films and support the development of it. However, the AR film and TV program can make the connection between digital form and people more interactive since it provides new information on top of what people see. Even though it is not produced as a complete, but the idea that the AR film and TV program hold can bring a significant change, for example, in children show, they can directly interact with the program which provides education and experience through entertaining children. They may draw, write, or doing some exercise that has been done only in reality.

Not only in the visual field, but AR can also be applied to audio technology system. Once, Doppler Labs, company that produce AR earbuds released the earbuds that control the natural sounds around you while making the music sounds fit the users. Users can control the sounds like canceling the airplane sounds while allowing chatting sounds to be hearable, or in another situation such as concert, users can amplify the bass in the live show or concert through the earbuds. Through AR technology in the audio system, people can easily customize and adjust their music sound to their environment. Also, it can provide service that shows score sheets or lyrics which make the deeper interactive connection with sounds and people.

How 3D printing can be applied to Supply Chain System

Supply chain management plays a vital role in the market where handles physical products and supplies those completed products globally. Even the current supply chain system which vastly uses technology for efficiency cannot predict the exact demand and supply due to the unpredictability of human behavior and what happens in real life. For example, we cannot perfectly foresee what would happen in supply and demand of vehicle industry, calculating the exact number of accidents, environmental factors, or individual preferences; thus, we cannot prepare the number of supplies that market demands, creating only profits continuously.

Due to these issues in stocking part in supply chain had brought an idea of “Digital Inventory” which is creating the component products by 3D printing that sent from the manufacturer through specific IP. Digital Inventory can significantly reduce the time for both consumers and final suppliers (who make finished products) and follow fast-changing demand in a safe range without making great losses from it. This system is not in a complete step of implementation since it has several requirements for practical application.

It requires “1) Strong Intellectual property security, 2) Qualification of all concerned additive manufacturing materials, systems and processes, 3) Training for workers printing and finishing each job, 4) Adoption on the part of suppliers. “The process of sending the model through specific IP should be protected from external attacks, and also the quality of the products from 3D printers should be matched with the existing model so that returns/unexpected result would not interrupt current market. In addition, adjusting workers into new condition should be also critical for making this system successful.

How VR and AR can advance the health care system

https://www.digitalhealth.net/wp-content/uploads/2018/02/virtual-reality.jpg

I have always thought that Virtual Reality is mostly helpful for those who works in the educational field, and even if it stretches to other field, health care or family use, the first thing that came up to my mind was for the academic use such as training professionals with realistic environment and providing educational content for learners. However, beside these educational aspect, Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality can be efficiently used in various ways. Not only in the hospital, its usage can benefit broad range of people regardless of health condition, age, and limitation in places.

The Blue Room, a Virtual Reality technology created by NewCastle University, helps those with autism by providing realistic scenarios that could happen in real-world through VR to overcome the phobias in everyday life. Also, a local charity called LOROS Hospice had provide patients who cannot get out of bed by themselves and terminal patients a ‘virtual walk’ , just like in the park, through VR technology.  These kind of innovation within a technology industry. Training professionals are important but providing patients a better condition of treatment is also a crucial part of health system that cannot be easily ignored.

Outside of hospital, these technologies also affect in daily health life; for example, there is a mobile app that is created for exercise by combining elements for gaming and entertainment to make an enjoyable exercise habit and this app uses AR simulation to design a survival race from zombies. I think this is an original idea for health app, because it makes exercise more fun and enjoyable. I would love to try this app! This article showed me how the VR and AR can influence the field outside of education aspect.
