In Game Advertising

So in class this week and last week we discussed business models and something that really caught my attention was the lead generation. In this day an age, game makers are now trying to advertise products within the game. It really made me wonder if this was a really effective method as we discussed in class how in LoL, if you registered for a credit card you could get in game credit and in the end users were abusing the system by creating multiple accounts and sending items to their main accounts and cancelling whatever cards they registered in. I know in other games there are things like taking a survey to get in game money or to register an account on a certain website to get some in game money. I am really curious to see how much of the users who actually use these rewards follow through with the ads and utilize them. Just like how we discussed in class when users would apply for a credit card and then cancel after they receive the reward. Is this just a way for games to be exploited or do advertisers really get the revenue? I wonder how effective this can be in the overall picture as there will be a majority of people who will attempt to exploit these rewards such as me.

Companies obviously value the expansion of the familiarity of their names even in the event that there are no direct transactions being made. When companies advertise on TV or billboards, they know that most of the people that view these advertisements aren’t going to directly go to wherever they need to to make a deal with that business. However, it’s possible that the next time a consumer needs a product that that company provides, the consumer will think of that company first. Even if you sign up for something and then immediately cancel, you are still getting more exposure to that organization than if you were just to see a commercial for that organization, and, in some cases, this type of advertisement might be much cheaper than TV advertisement. Maybe just the exposure is enough to be worth it.

I have to agree with Kelly. Although I do not have much knowledge in this area, I have a hard time believing that advertisers would continue to operate in this medium if it wasn’t profitable. There will always be people who cheat the system, it is just a matter of making it difficult enough that the number of people doing it is negligible. A lot of business is done in similar situations, for instance banks operate with what is called a “fraud floor” and as long as the fraud is below a certain level, it’s business as usual.

I think in-game advertising is really about a trade-off between the gaming experience and profit. Even though in-game advertising has the capability of rewarding game makers with revenue from advertisers, it will compromise the quality of the game to some extent. I personally have an Android app up and running on Google Play store and I remembered by the time I launched the first version, several advertising companies recommended me to plug in in-app advertisements and I will get paid for that. I was kinda hesitated about that for a little while but I said no to them eventually. Since I’m not trying to make it living out of that, I choose quality because I don’t want anything unnecessary appearing in my app. However, if I am an owner of a start-up game company, I will probably deeply meditate about that and try to make an unbiased decision because I am trying to balance between the gaming experience and the profit, which from my point of view, is the key to success in in-game(in-app) advertisement business

I think advertising is good even though some people take advantage of it to just get rewards in the games and then cancel the cards. I’m sure advertisers get the revenue – if they didn’t then no one would ever advertise in games. So i think it’s a good way to get your businesses name out there to a select crowd (the gaming crowd).

I think that advertising and microtransactions are great for the games that can use them, like LoL, you can purchase many different cosmetic skins to stylize your character. This may advance into gaming tournaments having their sponsors like Intel and Razer gaming logos around the actual game map so that spectators can see it during the match.

Though I see that there could be projected problems with this affecting gameplay performance and distracting the players it could be really make some big money for those trying to attract attention to their game.
