Elemental Archer – Individual Prototype

For my individual game I wanted to try to make a game with simple mechanics and a cool art style. All of the games that I have made in the past have been based around some new type of mechanic and art that I whipped up with Power Point shapes.

After learning about Stencyl and playing around with it for a little, I saw that through the Stencyl Forge I would be able to download all of the tiles I needed to make some pretty cool game worlds. I decided that I would make each level represent a different element, and after some searching I found a sprite sheet for an archer that had different elemental arrows, hence Elemental Archer.

After some searching online I was able to find some enemies that I thought really fit the worlds I wanted to make. I was able to put them all together using the Stencyl platform and used some simple jump and shoot mechanics to allow the user to pregress through the game. I really enjoyed designing different levels and trying to come up with new obstacles given the tilesets I was able to download from the Forge. In the end I was very happy with how the game turned out, and although there is a lot of polish I would have liked to add, I think it plays fairly well too. Given more time I would have loved to expand each level into a series of progressively harder levels, and I would have added more of a variety of enemies.

One Response to Elemental Archer – Individual Prototype

After reading about your game, I decided to try it out. The game look like very similar to the Super Mario games that I used to play a lot when I was in elementary school. After playing the game my hypothesis was correct, the game had the same mechanics as the Super Mario games but there were quiet a lot of differences as well. The game had the same objective as Super Mario; race through each level by moving the player from the left side of the screen to the right side of the screen. But instead of jumping on a flag pole the player would jump through a portal, which would take the players to the next level. Each level was done very well for the limited amount of time the creator had to make the game. I found that the animation of the sprites were very nice and ascetically pleasing. And that with each level the elemental archer would use a different type of element to kill the enemies. Very nice game and I enjoyed playing it a lot.
