GTA V on Oculus Rift

I stumbled upon this article and video today, and it absolutely blew me away. I checked it out because we looked into the Virtuix Omni earlier in the semester when we talked about the possibilities of the virtual reality gaming, and I couldn’t believe they hooked it up to GTA V. It’s actually a little scary how accurate it all is, but if this is the future of gaming then I’m all in. Of course, the price of all of that equipment is probably out of range for most modest gamers, but if they can bring the price down on all of this in the future, it would be huge. There are obviously a lot of refinements needed here but it has a lot of potential. There appeared to be a lot of mixed reviews in the comments, as expected I suppose, and they bring up some valid points. #1: It would be pretty exhausting playing for extended periods of time, although this could be a good thing depending on who you ask. (exercise, etc.) #2: Things could get pretty weird with in-game prostitutes (I found this point both funny and extremely true) #3: Driving was a little strange with the gun controller.

So while there is certainly more work to be done here, I think it could be awesome with a little tweaking.

That video is amazing. If this had been released when I was a kid, I think we would all be in amazing shape. Not only does it get you off the couch and on your feet, but it really immerses you in the game. It may take you a little while longer to get places though in games without vehicles because unlimited sprint may not be so unlimited anymore.. Either way, I can’t wait for this kind of technology to be available to the consumer. I would definitely be down to save up for something like this.

I watched the video, and it is very funny to see someone wear Oculus Rift headset and run but mark time exactly at the same position. However, I cannot agree more that the virtual reality technology is the future of gaming, because it makes the game even more real. With the headset and the headset, it is easier for the gamer to get involve into the game.

About the promotion of the devices, it will take a while to have the price get down. Just like other new invention, the designers need some time to adapt the design of the game to fit in the virtual reality mode.

Also, I am thinking as there are more and more 3D movies coming out and there are even some cinema offering the 4D experience, the trend of virtual reality in gaming is inevitable. Currently, lots of the designers use software like maya and z-brush to build up the 3D model, which makes some champions in the game more real and vivid. And the design of 3D models becomes more meaningful with the virtual reality technology in game.

I agree with most of the commenters here that this is a look into a part of the future of gaming. The general consensus seems to be that it is good but dangerous, as the extremely immersive experience mixed with violence could be trouble. Although I can see where the sharks were coming from about the Omni, I think that I disagree. I think it should be seen as an opportunity to change what it means to “play videogames”. I know the stereotype of the lazy gamer but that could easily be changed with technology like this. It would be really easy to convince people to work out and get healthy if they could play video games at the same time.

This is a very interesting idea. I remember when I was introduced to the Virtuix Omni first when I saw the owner’s pitch on Shark Tank. I thought to myself, “This is a really clunky kind of technology.” I ended up agreeing with sharks on the show where they said remarks like “No one is going to want to pay an extra $700 on top of the money for the VR headset on top of the gaming console on top of the game itself” or “People that play video games don’t want to get up and move around while playing their favorite video games”. I still stick to my opinion that although in theory the Virtuix Omni is a very fun idea and I would love to try it, the very idea of it is counter to what the role of video games is nowadays. Video games are a means to explore, adventure, and entertain yourself without moving around too much or spending lots of money to do it.

This is a really great addition to the whole VR space but I don’t think it’s the right direction for the idea of VR.

This is one of the technologies that i am looking forward to seeing be released and mass produced. it will be very interesting to see company design games for this technology as well as incorporate them into their existing projects. I can see so much backlash for violent games however as the media always portrays violent games as bad and brainwashing. I personally believe this technology will be the next step to the greatest Emerson experience ever created. I would love to see this not only in fictional games but along side sports games as well to allow the player to fully experience the superstar life style.

Definitely one of the coolest things I’ve seen in terms of virtual gaming. I would’nt be surprised if there was time sometime in the future when virtual headsets won’t be as uncommon and Rockstar might be releasing a GTA based on the virtual reality world. It would be very interesting how they would handle motion in the game especially certain actions like driving, shooting and throwing people out of the car and stealing the car (can’t forget that). I think games like GTA and Saints Row are very good choices to be the ones in virtual reality since they are open-world and there’s so much a person can do. The experience is almost like being in a completely different world living a different life. I’ve seen people live in games for days at a time and I won’t be surprised if someday people might actually be doing that…leaving all the negative points aside for a while and just focusing on how cool this is. Definitely a lot of modifications are still needed and yet to come into virtual reality to make that feasible but it’s a chance I’ll be waiting for.

That might be one of the coolest things I’ve seen done with a virtual reality gaming device. I think it’s a good start but there are definitely a lot of things that would need to be worked out. Like for example, how would you shoot while driving? Also I could not tell how many buttons were actually on the controller. It doesn’t seem like his under-barrel hand is pressing any buttons. If that is the case it severely limits how much he can actually do in the game. I think it would be very interesting to combine this technology with something like a haptic glove. Then motions could be recorded on the glove hand and the player may be able to do things like physically car jack someone or physically aim or drive.
On a different note, GTA V while open world and a great overall example of how virtual reality technology can be used, this is probably not the best game to be doing this for. I understand that there have been plenty of studies on violent video games and the difference between games and real life, but does this kind of technology grey the line? I can see serious studies going into people using virtual reality devices to play violent video games in the future.
