Heroes of Storm and MMOs

Few years ago, my friend tried to get me involved in MMOs by introducing me to Dota 2. That game fascinated him like nothing else did. While he tried repeatedly to get me addicted to it, I never quite got the appeal of the game. I installed the game on my own computer and played it for quite a few hours as well. I suppose I never did quite explore the social portion of that game well enough. But our discussion in class here as well learning about the development of MMOs in another GAME course at Penn State has definitely renewed my interest in MMOs.

I’ve started playing Heroes of Storm this week, and the first thing that I noticed was the incredible graphics. I started to understand the appeal of MMO games slowly. Based on my understanding, the graphics, the social aspect, and the freedom to create your own character however you want make these games are what give these games popularity. According to Forbes, esports are only going to add to this, making games like Heroes of the Storm even bigger in the coming years. However, I would like to hear some other aspects to MMO games that make them so highly attracting to players.

I was introduced to DOTA a while ago by my friend. I’m not surprised that the graphics have upgraded to the current standards. Despite that however, I still think I need to explore MMOs more to understand the specifics of the social component of the games.

I am not sure when was the last time you played DOTA 2, but whenever it got the graphical upgrade, all the other MOBAs, including League of Legends, looked very poorly when compared to DOTA 2. Many players outside the DOTA 2 community are very thankful for the graphical revolution it sparked, because it pushed developers to bring their games to the same level as DOTA 2.
