What do you guys think about the Nintendo Switch in turns of possible new game design?

What do you guys think about the new Nintendo Switch in turns of what new types of game mechanics it might bring to the table? If you haven’t heard about the Nintendo Switch, it is a “hybrid” console where you can dock it to your big screen TV or attach controllers to the slides and play it on the go.

Up to this point, the gaming market usually divides into 4 categories of systems: PC gaming, home console, handheld and mobile device. Each of them can have very different types of games. So my question is that is Switch just a home console that is small enough that you can take it on the go with you because it has a built-in screen. Or the Switch can actually offer developers to build new types of game that can take advantage of the convertible factor and create new gaming experience.

I think the Nintendo is definitely trying to lure core gamers (and more importantly 3rd party developers) back into their corner with this new console. I used to be a huge fan of Nintendo, and while I have still have a lot of respect for the games that they make, it just doesn’t seem to be worth it to purchase another console just to play their games. I predict that one of two things is going to happen with the Nintendo Switch:

    1. 3rd party developers will refuse to develop their games for the Switch because Nintendo will insist that they must be playable in both the docked and portable fashions.

    2. 3rd party developers will develop games for the Switch, but will only be playable in one of the two ways the Switch was intended to be used.

I think Nintendo needs to get back in the ring with Sony and Microsoft, and extend some much needed olive branches to 3rd party developers by putting these gimmicky controllers on the back-burner, getting therapy for their DLC and piracy phobias, and taking graphical capabilities more seriously.

I am a person who likes to play games on my mobile device. That being said, I very much like the idea of Nintendo’s Switch simply because I can get the portability out of it, much like I would with my mobile device. This kind of technology can essentially reach out to wider variety of audience simply because of its innovative construction; it could capture the attention of console players as well as mobile players.

I think this idea of a universal console takes an omnichannel approach to gaming. Omnichannel is usually a term for shopping, but the idea that multiple platforms can be used to integrate a user’s experience seamlessly between them is pertinent here. The Nintendo Switch seems to me like they are trying to beat competitors to the same idea. I don’t know much about the gaming industry, but it wouldn’t surprise me if we saw more gaming companies following suit.

I’d like to see laptop manufacturers adopt some ideas from the Nintendo Switch. Soon the processing power of tablet PCs will increase to a point where we will be able to play current gen games on a tablet running Windows without sacrificing frames or resolution. Having a couple Thunderbolt ports on the tablet will allow it to be docked to external displays, GPUs and other peripherals. While still being able to play games in a handheld form.

Nintendo has always been an innovative leader in gaming, especially in their last two consoles. While a portable console is definitely a huge change, I don’t believe they will create new ways to play other than what has been announced. I believe they simply intend the convertible form to be to play standard console games on the go or away from a TV.

Many also thought that the Switch might kill the 3ds, but Nintendo has since said that they are still planning on selling the two side-by-side. If they did decide to stop manufacturing the 3ds, I believe the Switch would in fact change the gaming experience by merging mobile and console games. Since this is not the case, I believe the Switch to just be another console (although with some cool new features).

Most technological advances have been pushed forward by “risky” changes to the current way of doing things. I feel like the switch is poised to usher in a new era of gaming where you can not only take your core games with you, but also has given game developers an opportunity to explore a completely new segment of games. Developers could build games that say, have portions of gameplay meant to be played on the high-res screen in your living room, and other parts that could incorporate the multiplayer features. Who knows what new ideas developers will have to incorporate the different modes of the console into their games? It will be very interesting to follow.
