The concept of “Stevie Longlegs” is based on our team’s goal to create a simple, unique, and addicting video game that players of all ages can appreciate. The nuclear war of 2018 has caused mass extinction and terrible mutations on the few survivors left. The world is polluted with evil monsters who have tasked themselves with chasing the survivors, causing them to be on the run for the rest of their lives. Luckily for our main character, Stevie Longlegs, the effects of the initial blast have caused his skin to turn a radiation-absorbing green, his body to become aerodynamically round, and his legs to grow long and lean to support his new found hobby of running.
Players will guide Stevie throughout this desolate land to avoid obstacles such as molten lava, rocks and debris, and bottomless pits. Food is scarce and Stevie must pick up enough food to keep his energy up and his legs moving. Stevie can also pick up and hold one special power up to grant Stevie a 15-second boost of speed and extra-long jumping power to use whenever the player wants and may be useful to escape the monsters that may have gotten a bit too close. Any mistimed jump or accidental contact with the obstacles will slow Stevie down and let the monsters get close. Multiple mistakes in a short period of time, running out of energy, or falling into the lava or bottomless pits will be game over for Stevie. The game will keep score and the longer Stevie runs, the higher score the player receives. Leaderboards of the top scores will let players compete for the best possible score. This game will be created using the Unity 2D gaming development software and the game will run on PC. Time permitting, this game can expand to run on mobile phones and may incorporate multiple level designs. We may also look into the concept of using Stevie’s scores as points to gain attribute power-ups. The mechanics of a 2D infinite side-scroller game are not new or revolutionary. It is our job to create an environment that is fun with an appropriate challenge curve to keep a player coming back to our game vs. all of the others.
