The Pokemon series has been going on for a long time now and as such the game has changed throughout the years. Initially, the games were played on a Gameboy and as the platforms changed the game its stayed true to its roots with minor tweaks.
The similarity between the games is obvious in a way that you won’t have to relearn controls or processes to complete the game. Both start you off in a new town where you need to meet the local professor whose only real change is in his appearance along with his name. Once you meet him he gives you choice over a starter Pokemon.
Pokemon Red Starters
Pokemon Emerald Starters
This is always the combination of water, grass, and a fire type Pokemon. Just like all the games you also have a rival who gets to pick after you do. Initially in Red the rival was Gary (unless you changed his name), however Emerald you get to pick to play as a boy or girl and your rival is opposite of your choice. Both games are a turn-style combat game in which the Pokemon attacks or actions are animated. Both games show Pokemon’s health during combat and also give you the same options menu when in battle. Additionally, certain attacks such as poison continue to affect your Pokemon even after the battle in both games. The PokeCenters are in both games and allow you to heal your Pokemon for free. Likewise, PokeMarts are still around where you can buy supplies for your journey in the game. Both games have gangs (Red has team Rocket and Emerald has team Aqua and team Magma).
