Technology Domains

A technical domain is defined as an organized set of technology components based on technology or organizational similarities. “Platform models” contain a “single stack of layers that describes the complete infrastructure required for any application”. Middleware components that bridge information between applications are also considered domains as well because they support application rather than being considered as applications themselves (middleware).

A domain architecture will provide the following attributes:

  • A definition of the domain architecture
  • An overview describing the domain architecture
  • Identification of the IT or technology trends relevant to the environment
  • A description of the global design principles associated with the domain architecture
  • A description of more-specific principles, trends, technologies, standards, products and configuration for each major area included in this domain architecture
  • Reference to other related domain architecture  (Robertson.Dec2005)

A technical domain, along with Patterns, Services, and Components are combined to define the Technological Viewpoint of an enterprise. Gartner reiterates the value in the simplicity of a conceptual approach using the “four-slide approach to define the technology platform’s viewpoint”.

Slide 1: Current State

This section should include a short description of the domain as well as the domain name, a summary of technical components, common examples of the current state, trends and principles. Lastly, they should also contain a link to other domains.

Slide 2: Future State

This slide should contain the same information as the future state and annotate additions using bold letters. Future assumptions should be added along with other added components needed to address future operating environments.

Slide 3: Gap Analysis

This section will elaborate with a description to the changes made from the current state to future state.

Slide 4: Migration

This section will “define a high-level set of projects that will initialize the migration from current state to future state in some reasonable increments”.
