Investigating Information Systems: Business Information In Major League Baseball

As a kid, I always enjoyed the game of baseball. I played it from morning until dusk and then watched the Atlanta Braves play at night on TBS. When I got older, I read the book Moneyball by Michael Lewis and found that teams have been using business intelligence systems to make better decisions with its personnel. I found this to be fascinating. The stars that I idolized and that were traded or signed with other teams that I probably cried about losing as a kid might not have been a good value for the Braves to sign. I am not sure if I would have cared as a kid, but now, I see huge contracts being offered and it’s fun to see what the baseball purists think versus the sabermetricians. This is why I chose to research this topic.

Researching business information systems in baseball was a little harder than I expected. I used different techniques to get more precise results, but I still came across several articles that had to do with Moneyball being used in other businesses. I found this to be interesting, but the results were off-topic. I was pleased with some results though, as I found a few articles that featured specific baseball teams like the Athletics, Pirates and Red Sox. This made the process more individualized rather than just general concepts of how business information systems help teams.

Another challenge that I faced was formatting. It has been a long time since I have done a research paper. The internet provides lots of help in this situation. Lastly, I needed to find articles to explain sabermetrics as easily as possible. For some, this can be boring or difficult to understand. For the paper, I chose the most common and most relevant metrics to discuss in the paper. Overall, I really enjoyed the experience.
