Commissioned Art Piece Honored at Anniversary Celebration

Altoona native Marian (Schwartz) Garfinkel attended the Altoona Undergraduate Center in 1951-52. She earned her bachelor’s degree from University Park and attended Temple University’s medical school.

Garfinkel’s research into the use of yoga in treating hand injuries was enhanced through an association with B.K.S. Iyengar, founder of a yoga style which bears his name.

In 1976, Garfinkel honored Iyengar by commissioning a sculpture. The piece has been on loan at Morris Arboretum of the University of Pennsylvania since 1988. The arboretum recently celebrated the anniversary of the sculpture in its gardens, where university officials say it has become a beloved part of the Arboretum landscape.
