For two summers, I worked full time as an assistant to the Water Operators in the Water Department at the Doylestown Township Municipal Authority (DTMA). I was able to learn about the operation of a large scale system such as a public water supply system. I was tasked with many different objectives throughout the two summers that I worked there. These included:
- Monitor well stations and pits (test chlorine levels/record flowrates and operating conditions)
- Assist on large projects such as main break repairs, pipe maintenance, well cleanings
- System flushing via hydrants
- Collect water meter data
- Calibrate pH probes
- General shop maintenance
My experience at DTMA was valuable in contributing to my ability to think critically and solve problems. Some days I worked independently and others I worked alongside of the Water Operators. I was provided with my own work vehicle, and on the days that I worked independently, I was forced to think critically and solve the problems I encountered on my own. This was key as the Water Operators were often tied up with other tasks and my ability to problem solve allowed us to be efficient as a team. On the larger projects, in which many more personnel were involved, I was forced to develop my teamwork and communication skills in order to understand and complete my role in the project. This position was very rewarding; I enjoyed working with the people at DTMA and am very grateful for this experience.
