Edge of Today?!

Edge of Today?! A possible prequel to the action-adventure sci-fi film Edge of Tomorrow (2014)? Edge of Tomorrow is not the best name for what happens in the film, but regardless, the film concept is amazing! A prequel or origin story would make the alternate world even more exciting than it is! For those of you who haven’t watched it yet (highly recommend if you’re into action movies), I will give a brief summary.

***** CAUTION: SPOILERS AHEAD *****

Edge of Tomorrow - Wikipedia
Edge of Tomorrow movie poster with Cage and Rita in their exoskeletons!

The movie begins by throwing you into an unknown variation of reality where aliens, named Mimics, are attempting to invade and take over. To beat the so called Mimics, the world’s joint forces created an exoskeleton that enhances a humans strength. With this new technology they were able to win their first battle with the Mimics. A media relations military officer, William Cage played by Tom Cruise, gets into trouble and is sent out to the front lines for an almost certain death. The offensive is a colossal failure and many die within seconds. Cage miraculously is able to defeat one of the Mimics and gets coated in its blood. He then dies to another Mimic, but suddenly wakes up where he was a day prior. Over his next few lives, he attempts to figure out what is happening to him and finally decides to go and talk to the hero of the only battle that has been one. Once he talks to her, Rita Vrataski played by Emily Blunt, she tells him that the same thing happened to her and that is why they won. In his next life, he seeks her out before the battle and she begins to train him over his next lives. Once he is trained enough, he sets out to the battle and makes it further with each life. His goal is to reach the Omega Mimic who controls the regular Mimics and destroy it. He is able to find out where he is with the help of Rita and ends up defeating it. He then dies due to wounds and wakes up two days prior in an alternate reality where he has his original military tittle and the Mimics are weak and helpless.

I suggest a prequel be made because I cannot think of a plot for a sequel. In a prequel, the initial battle where the humans would could be the main plot line. Writers could also go in the direction of an origin story of the Mimics and what they have gone through. Maybe this plot line could Mimic Ender’s Game which I discussed in a previous post. All in all, there are a lot of directions for the prequel to go in that will keep us guessing.

The movie did not make outrageous amounts of money, but it definitely did well enough for another movie, so that is not stopping anything. The movie’s budget was estimated to be around $178 million and it grossed about $370 million worldwide. With this profit there is no reason that there shouldn’t be a sequel.

I definitely need to see another movie in this alternate world, and I am sure I am not the only one!

The Last Witch Hunter 2!

Mutual Misunderstanding: The Last Witch Hunter
The Last Witch Hunter movie poster.

The Last Witch Hunter (2015) is one of the best action fantasy movies out there! Many people including myself would be very excited for a sequel! There are many directions the writers can go, and there is a lot of potential. For those of you who don’t plan on watching (even though I highly recommend it) or forget what happened, here is a summary:

***** CAUTION: SPOILERS AHEAD *****

The movie starts in a village where Kaulder’s (played by Vin Diesel) family dies from the plague and he sets off to kill the witch queen who caused it. Luckily, he is able to survive, but the queen cursed him with eternal life before he died. With this curse he sets out to hunt witches and protect humanity from them. After saving a witch from herself, Kaulder’s assistant, Dolan (played by the infamous Michael Caine), is put under a powerful spell that can only be broken by killing the witch who put him under it. Kaulder begins to follow the clues and gets advice to remember his past. With this he requests a good witches help to put him under a dream state where he can go to the memory of his initial battle with the witch queen. While in this dream state, he is attacked and does not get a chance to finish it. He requests that the witch makes another, but she lacks the rare supplies. In the meantime the witch queen is resurrected by the same witch that attacked Kaulder while he was dreaming. After this a series of battles and tricky occurs and Kaulder loses his immortality to the witch queen. He is still able to go into the dream state and finds out that their hearts are connected, so if the heart is destroyed, they both die. He is willing to sacrifice himself once the get the heart, but doesn’t because the good witch persuades him that there are greater evils out there.

Kaulder fighting the witch queen before he was cursed with immortality.

Obviously the movie itself is much better than what could be written in a brief summary. There are many more intricate and small elements which I think really sets an elite movie apart from just a good movie.

What would the sequel be about? Well despite the tittle, I think Kaulder could have a child and they could be the next witch hunter. This would make a good training movie where the child is challenged too. Another path the writers could follow, is moving the setting to a time period between his initial battle with the queen and the time the movie is set.

The reason the sequel has not been made is because of the limited profit of the original. The budget for the movie was approximately $90 million, and it made almost $150 million. This profit is nowhere near as much money as some of the other sequels I have written about.

The Sixth Element!

The Fifth Element (1997) - IMDb
The original movie poster for The Fifth Element.

The Sixth Element could be a name to a spectacular movie of its time, The Fifth Element (1997)! Compared to science fiction movies now such as Interstellar, this movie’s use of Computer-Generated Imagery (CGI) is far less complex, but for its time the producers did a great job. For many people including me, this movie was far before our time, so I will give a brief summary to possibly spark some of you to watch it!

***** CAUTION: SPOILERS AHEAD *****

The movie starts by showing what a great evil in the universe has done to a military ship and shows its immense power. It is a great evil that appears only every 5,000 years, and only a group of 5 elements when combined can defeat it. Four of these elements (earth, water, wind, and fire) are held within stones while the fifth element is a person named Leeloo. Gremlins that work for the great evil plot to murder Leeloo, and take the stones. They do succeed in destroying the ship she was on, but with advanced biotechnology, she is brought back to life. When she wakes she jumps out of a window due to fear, she falls into a taxi that an ex special operative named Dallas is driving. The government then reaches out to Dallas requesting his help because he develops a personal relationship with Leeloo. They then go on to battle for the stones and obtain them. Once they have the stones and reach the ancient temple, the are able to unleash the great light which defeats the great evil. The movie itself is much better than a summary I could ever write and goes much deeper into detail that makes it exciting to watch.

The stones from The Fifth Element (wind, fire, earth, water pictured left to right)

A possible future movie may be named The Sixth Element. The sequel’s plot may introduce an additional element into the mix such as a non-Earth material or maybe can add an element that is emotion. This could be set 5,000 years after the original with the re-emergence of the great evil. Or possible, the movie could be set 20 to 30 years after the original where the characters have children and they have to fight an early emergence or a remnant of the great evil.

We would have seen a sequel sooner, but this movie was not exactly a blockbuster. It’s estimated budget was around $93 million, and it grossed worldwide approximately $264 million. Fortunately, this movie did make a lot of money, so a sequel is very much a possibility.

There is potential for this sequel to be extremely good, but as the years go on the audience it originally captured is fading. Evidently the time is now for a sequel.

Hancock 2!

Image result for hancock
The Hancock movie poster displaying the destruction he has caused in the background.

Hancock (2008) excited my wild side, and I want that same feeling again! Essentially Hancock (played by the infamous Will Smith) has super powers, but he doesn’t always use them as one would think. He is a superhero that damages property costing people millions. A sequel is needed, so we can get this same kind of thrill again!

***** CAUTION: SPOILERS AHEAD *****

For those of you who didn’t get a chance to watch it or forgot what happened, I’ll give a brief review. John Hancock is an alcoholic who has a few superhuman abilities such as flight, invincibility, and superhuman strength. The public views him as a menace to society, because his actions are reckless and he cost their society millions. One day he derails a train for a man named Ray. (PS re-read that last sentence). Ray invited Hancock over for dinner and they discuss his life. In order to help Hancock, Ray tells him to go to prison until society calls upon them. After some convincing Hancock goes to prison. Then, like Ray predicted, society calls upon him to help in a bank robbery. Hancock does save the day, but he still destroyers a lot of public property while doing so. Because of their minor success, Ray and Hancock get closer to each other. As they try to increase Hancock’s public image, it is found out that Ray’s wife is Hancock’s 3,000 year old cousin (both immortals). Hancock does not remember, but Ray’s wife explains that when they get closer together, they start to become mortals. The bank robber returns, and injures them both. Hancock flies away so that they both can recover from their near fatal wounds. The movie ends with Ray’s logo on the moon 🙂 (I thought that was pretty cool)

Now what might Hancock 2 be about? Personally, I would love to see an origin story. With both super-humans being 3,000 year old, a creative writer could venture in any direction with the amount of recorded history that has happened since then. In Hancock, we were never told how they got their powers, and not much information was given at all. This allows for a sequel to go practically in any direction.

Ray’s wife threating Hancock when he discovers their past.

The data shows that sequel would net a lot of profit as well. The original Hancock budget was about $150 million, and it made half of that back on its opening weekend alone. Worldwide, the movie made $625 million which is extremely good for a new concept movie.

Overall, a sequel would bring great profits for the producer and bring excitement to the audience. Its still a win-win situation, so bring on the sequel!

Ender’s Game 2!

Amazon.com: Ender's Game [DVD + Digital]: Harrison Ford, Abigail Breslin, Gavin Hood: Movies & TV
Ender’s Game movie poster.
We need a sequel to the science-fiction thriller Ender’s Game (2013)! Gavin Hood’s Ender’s Game had me on the edge of my seat throughout the movie. For those of us who try to silently guess what comes next in a movie, this one will leave you stumped and I strongly encourage you to watch it!

Without further ado it has been some time since the movie first came out, so here is a recap:

***** CAUTION: SPOILERS AHEAD *****

The movie begins on an alternate Earth where humans were invaded by an alien species called the Formics. Fortunately, the humans survived the invasion and began to train gifted students over a course of 50 years to launch a counter-attack. At this point, the movie introduces Ender Wiggins who is a quiet, but brilliant teenager. The military leaders recognized his exceptional performance regarding space battles. Ender is sent to a training program in orbit around Earth that helped him hone his strategic skills. While at school, he makes many friends and some enemies. His friends help him succeed by trusting his unorthodox strategies. Ender’s enemies are jealous of his success and try to harm him, but Ender was able to outsmart them in combat. Ender begins to have doubts about the ethics of what he is doing, but he pushes onward and trusts his leaders. When, again, the military leaders recognized his exceptional ability, they transport him to a station near the alien’s planet. Once there, he is put in charge of a team and they practice the counter-attack through advanced simulations. To see if Ender is ready for the real battle, the military leaders set up a ‘final test simulation’. In this simulation Ender successfully defeated the enemy Aliens and celebrates. Shortly after his victory, he is told that the ‘final test simulation’ was actually the real battle. Ender feels extreme guilt for the lives he sacrificed and the aliens he decimated (keep in mind Ender is merely a teenager this whole time). To end the movies, he sets himself on a mission to restore the species he destroyed. The movie itself is much more exciting and complex then anyone could describe in words.

Ender's Game: Reread, View, Review | The Princeton Buffer
Ender destroying the alien planet.

What would a sequel’s plot be? It could simply bring the viewer along on a journey throughout the solar system or an adventure on Earth to help revive the alien population. Ender’s alternate universe is completely unknown, as the movie mainly is set on Earth and space bases, so the writers could take the movie in a multitude of directions.

So why wasn’t there a sequel made in the past several years? There simply was not enough money to be made. Ender’s Game’s cast had a few A-list celebrities that most likely costed a fortune. This cast included Asa Butterfield, Harrison Ford, and Abigail Breslin. The complex CGI (Computer Generated Images) similarly costed millions. All factors considered the movie costed $110 million to make, and only brought in roughly $125 million. Unfortunately, with a profit margin of only $15 million, it would be too risky for the makers to fund a sequel.

We may never see a sequel to Ender’s Game, but regardless, it is a great stand alone film that is fun to watch. Maybe some day a company is willing to fund a sequel, and with that possibility I am excited.

Alita 2: Triumph of the Battle Angel

Alita: Battle Angel (2019) is one of the best movies to come out in the last few years. It is meant to have a second part, but Disney acquired Fox before work begun on part two. Many fans across America have signed petitions to get Disney to set in motion a sequel, but to no avail.

For those of you who did not watch it……… go watch it!!!! …… If you can’t, that is OK, but you should still take the time to watch it whether you like action movies or not.

Anyway, here is the recap if you still haven’t watched it or only vaguely remember it. The movie is set on Earth in the year 2563, 300 years after the war known as “The Fall.” Dr. Ido is scraping for parts in a junk yard when he stumbles upon a brain that has managed to survive. He installs the brain into an old robot and names it Alita. Alita does not remember anything from her past, but starts to remember slowly as she explores the city and body she is in. One night comes along and Alita decides to follow Dr. Ido when he leaves. It is revealed that he is part of a bounty hunter cult. While standing there, they both get jumped and are fighting their way out when Alita exhibits movements that have not been seen since the great war. The next day, Alita finds a space ship from her memories and discovers an elite bod inside of it. She brings it back to Dr. Ido, but he refuses to place her into it. Alita joins the bounty hunter cult so that she can earn enough to pay another doctor to put it into it. During this journey, Dr. Ido follows her and is eventually unable to protect her against those who have discovered her past. To protect her, Dr. Ido places Alita into the elite body. She then begins to go after the system and the people that are controlling the city. And all of a sudden, when the movie is about to get better, the screen displays “to be continued…”

That is just all of the major events that occurred, and there is the emotional subplot I could not account for, or else I would be writing for ages. This just goes to show that you have to watch the whole movie to feel the passion for the sequel at the ending cliff hanger.

The movie was one of the most expensive movies I have written about yet with a budget of $170 million. Fortunately, that money made the quality of the movie even greater with its stunning graphics. The movie, made nearly $500 million so I must ask, why is there not a sequel?? The only plausible reason I could come up with is that Disney does not want to risk spending that kind of money for a sequel.

Like I said in the beginning, a sequel is what the people want and are pushing for! Unlike some of my other blog posts, I actually believe there is a high chance of this sequel happening. Lets make it happen!

Robin Hood 2?!

Watch Robin Hood | Prime Video
Robin and his mentor training.

Robin Hood (2018) is an action adventure movie representing the iconic Robin Hood theme of stealing from the rich and giving to the poor. With modern graphics and video editing tools, this has been the best Robin Movie ever made!    ~Not to be confused with my past Robin post in which Robin was Batman’s sidekick~

For those of you who have not seen the movie, here is the recap. Robin of Loxley (a nobleman) is drafted into the Sheriff’s army. He served four years as a standard archer and returned home. Once he returned home, he found that the corrupt Sheriff had declared him dead and sold his estate along with his belongings. He even discovered his wife was with another man. He tells no one he is alive and meets someone that he had saved from the war. He saw the issues with the corrupt Sheriff and wanted revenge. With his friend from the army, he went under an intense training regiment to be come an expert archer (one of my favorite parts). Once, he was ready, he announced his return as Robin of Loxley. He told the Sheriff that he forgave him and he told his wife the same. He did indeed forgive his wife, but not the Sheriff. He still wanted revenge. His plan was to get close with the Sheriff so that he would have his favor and then he planned to take the money as a vigilante during the night. His rebellion group was on the rise started to give the stolen money to the poor, as he knew that would anger the Sheriff. The movie proceeds with Robin continuing this until the Sheriff made a mistake, and he capitalized. It results in a happy ending and he gets his wife back.

Movie Review - Robin Hood (2018) - DelmarvaLife
The Sheriff with his army.

Unfortunately, its trailers only portrayed the simple robin hood tale, so the public did not go to theaters to see it. Yes it was a modern take on the robin hood tale that people are not used to, but people were unsure of it. The movie also had high profile actors such as Jamie Foxx racking up a price tag of $100 million. Because of its lack of interest the movie only grossed about $87 million which is a big loss.

This means that the movie will never have a sequel, but what if it did? There has no been a notable robin hood sequel and I think that would sell well. The movie would take a robin hood tale and expand it further. Maybe they could tell the tale of robin hood after robin’s power move. The sequel could also follow robin on his mission to liberate other corrupt villages and area. There are many routes the sequel could go in and I think there is an open market for it.

Do you have any suggestions for my next blog, leave them in the comments below 🙂

Inception 2!

Inception (2010) was a mind bending action movie that had the audience on the edge every second. Personally, I was unaware the movie exited until quarantine struck. I was looking to watch a movie on Netflix and when I read the description of Inception, I was hooked. I wanted another movie, but unfortunately there isn’t one…yet.

The Moral Premise Blog: Story Structure Craft: INCEPTION: Can Dreams Become Reality? Should They?
The team inside of a dream world.

I will try to explain it the best I can for those of you who haven’t seen it, but I had to watch the movie twice to fully understand it myself. Dom (played by Leonardo DiCaprio) is an expert thief known for his ability to extract. In the movie, the term extracting is used when they go into someone’s mind during a vulnerable dream state and extract secrets. Because of his unique ability to do this, he is an international fugitive, so he has lost everyone he has ever loved except for his team. Similar to other movies, Dom is offered one last job. Instead of stealing an idea, their job is to plant one. To incept this idea, they have to go deep into the dream state and manipulate the person they want the idea to be in. The tricky part with this is that once the idea is planted, the task is done, meaning the team can not control the unpredictability of its growth. They have to complete the perfect job. Once into the dream state, they are attacked by the high profile person’s self conscious because the person underwent training against extractors. After many mind bending events and deep stories, the job gets completed. The team is free to do what they want, and some continue while other have other dreams they want to pursue.

All of the action sequences, different settings, and high profile actors made for a very high budget of about $160 million. Fortunately, all of this payed off considering the movie grossed over $830 million. Why not make a sequel? I am sure the work that everyone put into this movie was exhausting and possibly, they do not want to go through that again. With the right price, maybe they will, however. But the people have to really want it.

What did the reviews say? They were all glowing!

“A one-of-a-kind mind-blowing masterpiece!”

“Inception; Christopher Nolan’s first masterpiece!”

“Sci-fi perfection. A truly mesmerizing film.”

Inception' and the Therapeutic Nature of Dreams
If the top doesn’t drop, he’s in a dream.

Christopher Nolan directed this film and wowed us all…again. He also directed the Dark Knight trilogy which brought a similar level of unpredictability. Now he has two great options for sequels. I hope he makes as least one of them if not both! I would like to see Inception 2 rather than Robin, but I will enjoy either 🙂

World War Z2!

World War Z (2013) was one of many zombie themed movies and started like most of them do, with the outbreak. When I saw this, I was not impressed and lost interest. Somehow, by the end of the movie, I was sucked in and the characters had grown on me through their experiences that I only have watched. After the first time I watched it, I had to watch it again to get the full experience. At this point, I was sold that it was one of the better zombie themed movies to be made. In fact, they can not go wrong with a sequel (Z2).

How to make a zombie tsunami (from the guy who did it for 'World War Z') | Digital Trends
Zombies climbing the Jerusalem wall

For those of you who didn’t get the opportunity to watch it, I will give you the less thrilling recap. Former UN field agent, Gerry Lane, is with his family in Philadelphia when the city gets overrun by zombies. Him and his family were in a car and they watched people turning into zombies all around them. They fled to the closest building and harbored in a small apartment with another family. Once they figured out what was happening, an old friend of Gerry’s from the UN reached out and offered to send in a helicopter. Gerry’s family struggled to make it to the roof but they did and rode the helicopter to a military aircraft carrier. In order for Gerry’s family to stay on the helicopter, he had to do his part and help out. He traveled across the world to a military sight where it was believed the pandemic began. He spoke with a poisoner there that said Jerusalem already had a wall surrounding it. He then took the plane there and began asking questions to the person who built the massive wall. As he is learning more about how they knew of the virus, the infected start climbing the wall because people are making noise due to celebration. The infected make it over the wall and as Gerry tries to escape, he sees the infected avoiding an old man and a mal nourished boy. He determines that they are not healthy enough hosts for the virus, so the infected do not bother them. He travels to a research lab in Europe so he can tell them what he knows. Once there, he tests his theory through a dangerous and thrilling experiment. His theory was correct and the scientists there develop a vaccine and send it out.

World War Z (6/10) Movie CLIP - Zombie Stampede (2013) HD - YouTube
The malnourished child getting passed by the zombies

This sounds like a nice ending and the loose ends are tied, but the vaccine only prevents more from being infected. There are still millions if not billions of zombies running around the world. The sequel could dive into this issue. It could go into the direction of curing everyone or could lean more towards a survival movie. There are so many different variations and directions the writers can go in, that their is no issue writing another.

The original movie’s plot was changed several times and even resulted in the re-shooting of certain scenes. This did raise the budget significantly from $130 million to $190 million. Fortunately, the movie did do well in the box office and grossed a whopping $540 million! After realizing how much money was made on the first movie, Paramount Pictures almost instantly announced a sequel. The sequel was written but various complications halted production and it does not seem like it will be out in the near future.

The production company stopped things, but if the people really want a sequel, I am sure they will pick it up again. The movie had stellar reviews when it came out, but there would have to be another surge of excitement to get Paramount interested again.

This is what the people had to say after the first movie:

Light, family friendly and internationally marketable.

It’s NOT a zombie movie… It’s ten times better than that!

Now do YOU want a sequel? Comment below and it may just happen 🙂

The Goonies Are Back!

Some of you may have never heard or seen of the Goonies (1985). It was an extraordinary adventure and comedy film directed by Richard Donner with help from Steven Spielberg. “The Goonies Are Back” may be a possible title for a sequel. To fully understand why the movie needs a sequel, you have to watch it, but if you need a recap, here it is.

*** SPOILERS AHEAD ***

The movie begins with a group of neighborhood boys, the goonies, trying to save their friend’s house from foreclosure. They look in the attic for things to sell and stumble across a treasure map for One-Eyed Willy’s treasure. They follow the map to an old dinner and went inside. They found that the local crime family was running it but they decided to keep following the clues that led them underground. One of the goonies was captured by the crime family for interrogation and he found out that they wanted the treasure too. Once the crime family discovered the goonies were already on their way to the treasure, the family rushed after. Along the goonies path there were multiple booby traps that they had negotiate. After they passed all of the traps and evaded the crime family, they came across a pirate ship where they found One Eyed Willy’s corpse. They gathered as much treasure as they could carry and began to leave. The notorious crime family stopped them but they were able to make it out with the help of the police. Unfortunately, this summary does not do the movie justice as I missed the great comedic sections.

35-Year Anniversary of The Goonies: Where Are They Now?
“The Goonies” in the center with the “crime family” on either side.

The sequel to this movie would have to be set years later after they found the treasure because all of the actors are 35 years older than they were in the making of this movie. It would be great to see the actors on screen again, on another adventure. They could bring in new young actors and plot the movie with them as the original actor’s kids. If this were the case, it would still be nice to have the original characters back on screen. Some movies of this type have been seen as  failures, but now they know what not to do.

In The Goonies (1985) The cast was not allowed to see the pirate ship before the scene was shot, Director Richard Donner wanted to catch their genuine reactions at the size and
The pirate ship!

Compared to today, the movie had a very low budget, coming in around $20 million ($45 million today). Also, the blockbusters in 1985 did not ‘bust’ as much as they do today. It only costed around $3.50 to go to the movies in 1985, when today, it costs around $14 to see a movie. With this in mind, The Goonies made $64 million ($150 million today). Overall, this is a strong profit for a movie made in 1985, and it would most likely make more today with its audience. The movie did not really make much money outside the United States, and I think a sequel can be marketed to other nations as it does not have to completely rely on the sequel.

A sequel should be done. It may be hard to make right, but I think there is definitely room for success. I’m sure Spielberg’s and Donner’s talents can be used in other movies, but the goonies would be a nice retirement/flashback movie for them.

What movie do you think deserves a sequel?
