Pretty In Pink (1986)

As a cult classic, I thought it would be essential to watch Pretty In Pink, starring none other than Molly Ringwall. If I am being completely honest, I have never really liked Molly Ringwall that much.  Of course, the first thing I saw her in was The Breakfast Club and while I actually did like her character in that, that was probably the only piece that I have seen her in that I enjoyed.  Since then I’ve seen Sixteen Candles and more recent appearances on Riverdale, The Kissing Booth and The Secret Life of the American Teenager (I know I mentioned this on the last post, pure coincidence, I swear I don’t love this show).  I don’t know why but I have never been a fan so unfortunately, Pretty in Pink was already to a rough start.

I would say that the movie was good enough that I finished it.  I found the story bland, generic and a little boring. The characters I felt were okay but I didn’t have a favorite character of the film.  When I don’t have a character that I really like, I don’t have anyone that I am rooting for and not a lot of motivation. When obstacles would hit characters I didn’t feel effects and I honestly didn’t care that much.

There is one part in the ending that bothered me so much.   I will give my ~spoilers~ again. I thought both scenes when Andie received the dresses from Iona and her father were both really sweet and touching but also unnecessary.  If it were limited to only one of them giving her a dress, I think it could have been more impactful. I understand that she meant to make the dress her own because she’s just ~nOt like OtheR giRLs~ and is really quIrkY like that but she ripped Iona’s old prom dress and ripped the dress that her dad spent so much money on(and she yelled at him for it!).  She destroyed 2 dresses to make one dress (1+1=1). Grr. Sorry that made me upset.

I apologize I feel like I didn’t really speak too much about the actual movie but it wasn’t one of the better ones I have seen so overall 3.5/10. I think there are so many other movies that are similar but much better (Ringwall’s other movies like Sixteen Candles and the Breakfast Club!).

  1. Even though you didn’t give much information about the movie itself, I love your descriptions of the little things which really makes it personal. I also enjoyed your commentary about the dress as well as the use of an older movie.

  2. I agree I did not like the movie that much either, but I am also a tough critic when it comes to movies. But I liked that you gave your opinion and did not hold back just because it is a cult classic.

  3. I think it is okay that you at times stray away from the movie because emotion feels allow me to know that it could also affect me. I think I might watch it myself and see. I do understand though that it would make someone mad that she would destroy two dresses to make one.
