The Influence of Power

When I think about which aspects of my life are impacted by power, I was able to list a few prominent influences. Time and money affect my life in the most dominant way as they have control over what I can do, and when I can do it. Life as a college student can be thought of as a constant struggle of time management and budgeting. If money held no power over me, I would not need to hold a part time job to pay for my rent, and in turn, I would have more time to devote to my schoolwork and activities. Another powerful concept is knowledge. I am a firm believer in the idea that knowledge is power. What we know can affect how we respond to our environment and our visual culture. Lacking knowledge of a certain concept can limit one from understanding a viewpoint or way of thinking. After reading this chapter, I began to understand that the influence of visual information is extremely effective in eliciting emotions from others. There are many ways that I didn’t realize imagery could affect others, and myself, especially the power of visual experience. A single image could make a person feel anything from joy to anger. In this way, art can directly be a form of power, used to communicate an idea or emotion to anyone who views it. Imagery that affects one’s emotional state has the power to evoke a personal response. I believe that both the visual image itself and its connotations can have an influence, for what is seen can be very moving to an individual, and the meaning of an image will affect how one chooses to respond.
