WARNING: Contains Major Spoilers
1. Michael’s Gambit (Season 1 Episode 13)-
The best episode of the Good Place by far is the last episode of the first season. This episode starts off seemingly normal, with the humans discussing who would stay in the good place. Although there is this chaos, the disorder was not out of place considering everything else that had happened since the humans arrived. Previous to this episode, it had been revealed that Eleanor and Jason were mistakenly put in the good place and Shawn decided that two humans needed to be given to the bad place. Although Eleanor and Jason were the mistakes, the humans were given the option of sending any of them back. After fighting over who will go to the bad place, Eleanor stops and realizes something. She calls Shawn and Michael back and proceeds to tell the group that it doesn’t matter who says they will go to the bad place because Michael and Shawn won’t do anything. [SPOILER] When asked why, Eleanor reveals that they are already in the bad place. This plot twist is what makes this episode the best in the whole series– it makes you stop and rethink everything that you watched in the whole season. The reveal really blows your mind. Everyone who I’ve talked to about the Good Place has said the same thing, that they did not see the plot twist coming. Thus, this episode is the best in the series.
2. Janet(s) (Season 3 Episode 9)-
The next best episode of the Good Place is called “Janet(s)”. This episode really showcases the creativity of the writers and directors and the talent of the actors. In this episode D’Arcy Carden, who plays Janet, also acts as Eleanor, Chidi, Tahani, and Jason. Carden performs each of the other character’s mannerisms and signature characteristics, allowing the different characters to be identifiable even when they all look like the average Janet. Not only does this episode highlight the originality of the show, it is also simply an interesting episode. By placing the characters in a new environment, they have to problem-solve in unique circumstances, allowing for great character development. Eleanor struggles with her identity for one of the first times, showing a vulnerability that she always tries to hide. The episode ends with a satisfying conclusion to Eleanor and Chidi’s love story and the characters having to escape, once again, therefore completing the already captivating episode in a thrilling way.
3. Jeremy Bearimy (Season 3 Episode 4)-
The third best episode is “Jeremy Bearimy”, an episode in which the four humans learn about the afterlife, how they previously died, and how they now will be unable to go to the good place. While Eleanor, Chidi, Tahani, and Jason learn about how the afterlife works, the audience also gains this understanding of the timeline, which is called the Jeremy Bearimy. While this information is interesting and necessary to understand the characters’ actions for the rest of the show, this episode is ranked so high because of the funny reactions of the characters after learning their fate, specifically Chidi’s reaction. Chidi, an already anxious person who is fixated on living an ethical life, essentially has a mental breakdown. He walks around in a wine themed shirt from the grocery store and proceeds to make a peep chili in his class. The contrast of this version of Chidi with his usual, uptight self is really funny and makes this episode one of the best.
I’ve only seen one of these episodes because I haven’t watched the second and third seasons yet. The last episode of the first season was definitely the best– I agree. The crew of the show really did a good job hiding this plot twist, and I don’t think most people saw it coming. I’ll definitely have to watch the other seasons so I can watch the other best episodes in the series.
Although I’m not done with Season 3 yet (mostly due to Netflix being super slow to post it), I love The Good Place and hearing your analysis about it every week. Keep up the awesome work Jennifer 🙂
