This week, I will be discussing quite possibly my favorite teen show: Teen Wolf. Words can’t describe the nostalgia and love I have for this show. Teen Wolf aired on the CW from 2011-2017, but I first watched it during the end of summer 2020. This was during quarantine time, and I had absolutely nothing to do aside from watch Teen Wolf. I decided to give it a try, and was instantly hooked. Teen Wolf has all the hallmarks of a teen drama: complicated plot lines, lovable cast, high school drama, supernatural elements, and love triangles. In my opinion, it nails exactly what a teen drama is (and it even has teen in the title.)
From the title of the show, I’m sure you can assume this show involves werewolves. While some might see this as corny and too fake, Teen Wolf creates a detailed and intense storyline of an average high school student forced to experience the supernatural after being bit by a werewolf. The main character (and first werewolf character), Scott, attends Beacon Hills High School with his hilarious and sarcastic best friend, Stiles. This side kick character, played by Dylan O’Brien, happens to be my absolute favorite character and a major fan favorite. They are forced to tackle supernatural problems and attempt to hide Scott’s secret, all while dealing with typical high school drama and the lacrosse team. As someone whose played lacrosse for most of their life, this show also stuck out to me as the only TV show I’ve ever seen lacrosse represented in.
While I love this show, it may have had some of the worst special effects I have ever seen. In the first season, when Scott would shift into his werewolf form, the show would depict a hairy-er version of Scott running on all fours under a speed filter. It was truly bizarre to watch. However, the special effects got much better after the first couple of seasons, likely when the show got more popular and had more money to spend.
The true appeal of this show comes from its characters and the creativity the storylines have. Each season featured a specific villain, or group of villain. The season would follow a buildup to the unique new villain, with past seasons even foreshadowing and planting the roots for new evils to build off of. In the first season, there was a relatively simple storyline, with the villain being the werewolf that turned Scott into one. However, things quickly became more and more complicated. My favorite storyline is the most fan favorite one: when the lovable side character, Stiles, becomes secretly possessed by ancient dark spirit. Dylan O’Brien was my childhood celebrity crush since he was in Maze Runner, and his role in Teen Wolf just adds to how good of an actor I think he is.
Teen Wolf has all the drama you could ask for, along with elaborate supernatural elements, that make this show simply fun to watch. I was able to finish all 6 seasons of Teen Wolf in exactly 2 weeks, which proves just how entertaining this show was (even though 2 weeks is slightly concerning for 100 episodes of television.)
