The Systematic Instructional Design project is an in-depth document that lays out the instructional design process step-by-step. For this project, my partner and I had to choose a topic that went against the status quo. Through research, we found that Americans dine out for lunch or dinner almost 5 times per week (Zagat, 2018). In contrast, a survey by Peapod shows that 77% of Americans would rather eat a homemade meal than dine out (PR Newswire, 2018). We decided to plan an online course that teaches the basics of meal prepping as a way to go against the status quo of frequently dining out instead of eating a homemade meal.

There was extensive planning before we even got to the actual lessons in the course. We had to determine that there was in fact a need for this type of course, and then provide evidence that justified our reasoning. From there, we planned out the main steps that our learners would follow to advance them through the course and put them in a logical order, called the Sequence of Learning. Once we determined the Sequence of Learning, we had to break down each step of that sequence into prerequisites. This would ensure that we planned for any knowledge deficits our learners may have that would prevent them from being successful while taking the course.

Determining who the learners would be and in what context their learning would occur was the next step in the process. We also had to write Performance Objectives for each of those steps which detailed how to assess whether learning was occurring or not. For each of those objectives, we created supplemental materials such as tests and self-evaluations, that acted as a way for learners to determine how well they understood the material in the course. There were also materials that were used to help make calculations that were needed at certain points in the course.

Finally, we wrote out the details of the actual lessons, including what ways we would begin and end lessons, the materials needed at each step, and how we would be evaluating the coursework. The only thing left to do was create the actual course module in Canvas based on all of the instructional design work we had done up to that point.
