We’re freshman who (generally) take our schoolwork seriously. So what do we spend the majority of our time doing? Studying. But in the case of studying especially, quality is just important as quantity, and the way in which you study matters just as much as how long you stare at your textbook. I’m not here to instruct you on study habits, I wouldn’t know what to say. Instead, I thought I’d offer up some of my own favorite places to study on campus that will cater to all types of studiers. The white-noise cafes, the dead silence libraries, the weird, sort-of in between spots, they’re all here. I hope it helps.
- Pattee Stacks: For the fans of dead silence, the stacks are constantly quiet but often crowded. It can be hard to secure a cubicle, but once you do, you’ll enjoy the peace and serenity that can only be offered by a library. Another downside: if you’re like me, you’ll have to look for a non-window seat because the view from the stacks is impressive and distracting. As far as I know, the stacks are open 24/7, so they’re the perfect place for a late-night study session. Just be careful, because apparently someone was murdered in their midst in the 70’s.
- Redifer Commons: For those accustomed to white noise, Redifer is the perfect spot. Tons of places to grab a snack, lots of table space and a consistent hum of conversation that’s easy to block out make it an easy favorite. Up the stairs you’ll find a computer lab equipped with a printer as well. Every person working the checkout counters is incredibly friendly. A short walk from Thomas, Boucke and Osmand, it’s the perfect in-between-classes spot.
- Starbucks Downtown: For the more creative assignments, visit Starbucks and sit with the other coffee shop aficionados. A few of them will be writers. More background noise here, accompanied by a consistent aroma of coffee and caramel. Be sure to type vigorously on your laptop and only look straight ahead in order to fit in.
- Hub Lawn: definitely a seasonal spot, the lawn offers a very relaxing alternative to the crammed indoor spaces I’ve listed. Relax in the sun while being productive. Noise varies, but unless there’s an uber-competitive kickball game going on (as is sometimes the case) you’re in good shape with regard to noise. Remember to bring a blanket.
- The Arboretum: Another seasonal favorite, the pavilion at the north end of the Arboretum is a perfect spot to catch up on some major reading. You’ll likely be alone, especially in the afternoon. It’s monastery-like and generally peaceful save the odd leaf blower or noisy group. Definitely a long walk, but usually well worth the steps.
- Atherton Hall Zombie Lounge: The aptly-named Zombie lounge is a 24-hour quiet office on the east side of Atherton. It features long tables and homey lamps without the stuffiness of the library. Don’t be the person who tries to whisper despite the quiet signs, you’ll annoy absolutely everyone else.

I’m always doing homework in Redifer, easily one of my favorite spots! Since my sorority’s dorm floor is right there, after meetings or simply hanging out in my friend’s room, we will always end up going to Redifer for late night and to get homework done. Utilizing the Arboretum for a studying spot is definitely something I have to do. It’s so pretty over there and quiet, I will definitely be there at the start of next semester (or whenever it gets warmer).
