What you’re observing on your device is a simple and difficult reality. It’s clear what has happened here, a wildfire swept through the area, destroying everything in its path, leaving nothing behind except a black powder and a few to mourn what was lost. The truth is, this fire is going to happen again, and next time it could be worse. It’s difficult to comprehend the vast amount of destruction a wildfire can have based on one photo, but it should be a reminder to all of us the state of the world we are all living in right now. Being reminded however, is not enough, understanding the facts of the case is the key to understanding the problem and to allow us all to collaborate into making a solution. This photo in particular was taken in 2019, inside the Amazon rainforest in Bolivia. Much of Bolivia and the rest of the world experience some of the worst wildfires in its history, which is only happening more and more often as global warming continues to ravage the world into more and more chaos. Much of the world agrees that global warming can no longer be ignored or pushed to the side, and instead needs to be demolished by a joint effort of all the countries in the world. This effort is being worked upon through the United Nations 13 point of its sustainable development goals. Goal 13 focuses on global climate and motivates all the countries in the United Nations into focusing some of their resources to reduce the occurrence of wildfires and other damaging weather events. The UN has helped create measures for when wildfires strike, such as the “Fire Ready Formula” to help rethink how we approach wildfires and restore ecosystems after they’ve been impacted such as the ones in the photo. Knowing the details behind important photos, can help us gain a better understanding of their meaning and inspires us to want to make changes. Knowledge is power, and being curious about what you are seeing and reading can help unlock the keys to a better world, a world where we can collaborate ideas and information in a productive manner. Looking at a picture is one thing, but understanding it sends a clear message that we can help develop the necessary applications to construct a more sustainable world.
