Velcro

One of my favorite examples of biomimicry is what is considered to be a biomimic breakthrough. Velcro is one of the most useful materials to hold two things together and the idea for velcro is inspired through biomimicry. Burrs that come off of certain plants stick to clothing and animal fur and its very annoying. However, George de Mestral saw that they could be used for good too. He carefully studied how the plant stuck so well to things and found that the plant uses many extremely small hooks to grab on to any string like structure, such as clothing or fur. Mestral took this knowledge and created velcro. Velcro is now one of the most utilized materials for bonding two objects together and its all thanks to the annoying burrs found on plants.
