Many sources still misdate this image as 1498. Why does this matter? The earlier date reminds us that Signorelli painted ignudi prior to Michelangelo — which itself reminds us that who gets credit for what is never a value neutral matter. My working theory: among art historians, Michelangelo is recognizably “homosexual”; Signorelli is, rather, queer (and rather queer).
