Yankees Offseason Plan
The New York Yankee’s worst nightmare occurred this past week, as they got swept by the Houston Astros in the American League Championship Series. Ever since 2017, the Houston Astros have absolutely owned the New York Yankees, eliminating us from the playoffs three separate times. It seems that it is the same story year after year. We can not beat the Houston Astros. In order to become American League champions in the future, the Yankees need to have an amazing offseason.
Even though it will never happen, many Yankee fans have come to a realization that it is time for Hal Steinbrenner to sell the New York Yankees. The original owner was Hal’s father, George Steinbrenner, and he was the greatest owner the Yankees have ever had. It is clear that Hal is not as passionate about the Yankees as George was, so it is time for a new, energetic owner. Moving down in the ranks, next up is the general manager and the manager. The Achilles heel of this team is Brian Cashman and Aaron Boone, and they have completely failed to do their jobs in the past few years. There is absolutely no chance either of them will be fired, but it would definitely be the right thing to do. Now, lets move onto the roster.
We need players that will bump the baseball with their bat! First order of business, hand Aaron Judge a blank check. Aaron Judge is the best player in the world and should be the captain of the New York Yankees, whatever he wants to be paid, you give it to him. Second, there are a few players that have to leave, meaning Gleyber Torres, Josh Donaldson, and Isiah Kiner-Falefa. Gleyber Torres, has been declining for years, Donaldson was a liability at the plate all year, and IKF did not bring over the stellar defense we were promised. What does all of this mean? We now need a shortstop, and the perfect player is on the market. Trea Turner. Turner has been one of the premier shortstops in baseball for years, and he is exactly the guy the Yankees need in this lineup. He hits for a high average, plays elite defense, and is a class act. Although he will be very expensive, it will be worth it in the end. Third, we need to bring back Anthony Rizzo and Andrew Benintendi. They were both key pieces to the team this season and all Yankee fans would welcome them back with open arms. Overall, the Yankees have the pieces and money to win a world series next year, but it won’t happen without a successful offseason.
Favorite TED Talk

My Favorite TED Talk is titled “An NFL quarterback on overcoming setbacks and self-doubt”. This TED Talk is given by Alex Smith, former Kansas City Chiefs and Washington Redskins quarterback. I really enjoyed this TED Talk because Alex Smith was a favorite football player of mine, and I have followed his story very closely. In 2018, Smith suffered a life threatening injury during a game, when his leg literally snapped. Smith talks about the hardships of overcoming the injury, and the mental strength it took to keep going. The inspiring thing about his story is that he made it all the way back to the NFL after doctors told him he would never walk again.
When it comes to my evolving ideas research paper, I have not given too much thought on what my topic is going to be. If anything, I might talk about societal evolution or something that I can relate to.
NFL: Week 7
I can’t believe today is the start of week seven in the NFL season! This season has been full of surprises, underperformances, excitement, and disappointment. The current kings of the NFL are the Philadelphia Eagles. As of now, they remain the only undefeated team in the league at 6-0, and they sit atop the NFC East. Fans questioned third year quarterback Jalen Hurts coming into the season, but so far he has silenced any critiques. His amazing running ability mixed with his arm talent makes him one of the most dynamic quarterbacks in the league. Jalen Hurts has arguably been the MVP of football up to this point. One of the biggest surprises at this point in the season is the success in New York. Currently, New York football fans are on could 9, because the Jets AND Giants are both playing great. When’s the last time this happened? Nobody can really remember. The Giants are just one game behind the Eagles in the NFC East at 5-1, and the Jets are second place behind the Buffalo Bills in the AFC East at 4-2. For the Giants, there are two main behind their success; Brian Daboll and Saquon Barkley. After 2 years of being injured, Saquon Barkley is back to being one of the best running backs in the world, and he is carrying the Giants offensively. On the other end, head coach Brian Daboll has completely changed the culture of this team. As an offensive genius, he has transformed the New York Giants offense into a unit that can compete with the best defenses in the league. On top of this, he has brought great energy to the team and the locker room. When it comes to the Jets, they have been finding similar success. The Jets defense has been more than anyone can ask for, and 2nd year quarterback Zach Wilson is emerging as a premiere quarterback in the NFL. New York Jets fans don’t know what it’s like to have success, so this is a very strange year for Jets fans so far. It may be exciting for the time being, but they are not getting their hopes up. Lastly, I will talk about my team, the Chicago Bears. If I were to describe the 2022 Chicago Bears, I would say they are an open wound. They have a lot of problems at the moment, but I am confident we can fix these problems. 2nd year quarterback Justin Fields has been taking a lot of heat this season from critiques, as he has not played up to standard. Although I agree with this, I believe he has shown flashes every week and is steadily improving. Overall, this has been one of the most competitive NFL seasons in recent memory, and I am excited to see what goes down in week 7.
Season outlook : The 2022-2023 New York Knicks
Coming off of an extremely disappointing 2021-2022 season, the New York Knickerbockers (most people do not know this is their full name) are looking to bounce back in the 2022-2023 season. In 2020, the Knicks had one of their best seasons in recent memory, as we were the 4th seed in the Eastern Conference. Led by all-star Julius Randle, it seemed that the 2021-2022 season would be our year. It had been many years since the Knicks had high expectations going into a season, and the team did not follow through. Randle completely underperformed the entire season, and the Knicks were back to their old selves, as we did not even make the playoffs.
With opening night of the NBA season only 6 days away, Knicks fans are very skeptical of our current roster. The biggest story of this offseason was the Utah Jazz announcing they were looking to trade shooting guard Donavon Mitchell. Mitchell, at only 26 years old, is already one of the greatest stars in the league. He is the kind of player that will make an instant impact on any team. When it was announced that he was going to be traded, all eyes were on the Knicks front office. Mitchell has been linked to the Knicks for a very long time, as he grew up in New York, and his dad played for the New York Mets (his father was actually my baseball coach in high school). Long story short, the Knicks did not trade for Mitchell, as the Cleveland Cavaliers jumped all over him. Knicks fans were outraged by this as we felt he was the savior, but we have to move on without him. Instead, we extended our young star RJ Barrett to a 4 year, 120 million dollar contract. RJ is only 22 years old, and us Knicks fans expect big things out of him. As for the rest of the key pieces to the roster, we have Julius Randle, Evan Fournier, Immanuel Quickley, Obi Toppin, Derick Rose, Mitchell Robinson, Quentin Grimes, and most importantly, Jalen Brunson. After the Mitchell trade rumors broke, the Knicks went out and signed a player to a massive contract. Knicks fans were obviously hoping this player would be Mitchell, but instead, it was Jalen Brunson. Brunson was never really a star player, more so an above average point guard, but the Knicks gave him a massive 4 year, 104 million dollar contract. Knicks fans are looking forward to seeing if Brunson can live up top his contract this season. In the end, the 2022-2023 New York Knicks are going to either beat the Eastern Conference, or the Eastern conference is going to beat them.
Speech reflection
This was one of the first times I’ve ever had to give a speech, and it wasn’t even in front of an audience. After watching my peers speeches, I realized there are a number of things that I can improve on. First off, I should have done a better job looking into the camera. I had a printout of my speech in my hand, and I was looking down to read it. Next time I’ll have to use a different method to read my speech. Secondly, I feel that I could have spoke with more confidence. After looking back, it seemed I was far less enthusiastic about my topic than my peers. One thing that I feel I did good was getting out the information I wanted. I think I had good information, I just need to do a better job conveying it.
Updated Essay
There are very few things that affect the entire globe as much as world hunger. The entirety of the globe suffers from the tragedy of not having enough food for everyone to live healthy lives. In 2021, despite 10% of United State citizens being food insecure, the United States voted against making food a right in a United Nations draft. The majority of the world was outraged by America’s decision to vote no, and people believe that America cooperating with the United Nations is the key to ending world hunger. In contrast, The World Food Programme’s goal is to never stop fighting to end world hunger, and this decision is the polar opposite of America’s decision. As the United States voted against making food a right for everyone around the world, the World Food Programme is doing the opposite as they strive to make food a basic human right. Both of these artifacts also display the United Nations Sustainability Goal of world hunger.
Not much but this is what I have so far.
Playoff Bound
Tonight was a historic night for the New York Yankees. I am currently writing this blog at 10:02 pm, less than 2 hours after Aaron Judge broke the American League home run record. Judge led off the game against the Texas Rangers, and sent the third pitch he saw deep into the left field seats. This was his 62nd home run of the season, passing Roger Maris’s American League record of 61. Although Judge did not pass Barry Bond’s all time record of 73 home runs in one season, he now has the most out of any player that did not cheat with performance enhancing drugs. In my eyes, he is the new home run king. The baseball that was sent into the seats is projected to be worth millions of dollars; this alone shows how iconic this moment is. Even though the whole baseball world has there eyes on Aaron Judge right now, he wasn’t the only Yankee to make history tonight. Less than 20 minutes after Judge hit his home run, Gerrit Cole picked up his 249th strikeout of the season, making him the Yankees single season strikeout leader. Cole passed Ron Guidry’s record of 248 strikeouts. This is an impressive feat for Gerrit Cole, as he has been ridiculed all year for underperforming, and Yankees fans now are more confident about Cole pitching in the poste team can finally focus on season.
The past two weeks have been all about Aaron Judge, and now that he got the home run record off his back, the team can now look ahead to the playoffs. At this point there is only one game remaining in the regular season, and things are looking a lot better for the Yankees than they did a month ago. After a scare that saw the Yankees only 3 games ahead of the Rays in the American League East, the Bronx bombers pulled away with a strong September. The bats woke up and the pitching has looked strong. The Yankees are also starting to get healthy again, as pitchers Nestor Cortes, Miguel Castro, and Luis Serverino have all worked there way back, as well as infielder DJ Lemahieu. Outfielders Matt Carpenter and Andrew Benintendi have also reportedly recovered well from their injuries and are hopeful to make it back for the playoffs. As it is almost every year in New York, it’s world series or bust for this 2022 team. Too much money has been put into building this roster, so there is not excuse to not take home the title. I hope you thought this blog was a home run.
