As brainstorming and idea for the last & final blog, I was continuously drawing blanks. I wanted something grand but there’s so much I’ve done, except talk about my own personal sleep journey. So for my final post I decided to talk about my love hate relationship and also provide some relaxation and sleep management tips that you could try over quarantine.
I actually have a slight fear of sleep that I developed as a kid. Not necessarily of sleep but more so the dreaming aspect of it. I would and still do have the most vivid and intricate dreams. It wasn’t like normal dreams though, I get them religiously almost every night. The worst part is my family simply added fuel to the fire by interpreting my dreams with west African folk tales like if I dreamt of a party, someone was going to die. So naturally I was terrified. But, when these scary dreams weren’t happening, and I experienced just plain regular sleep, it was love. I used to turn my dreams into personal storybooks where I’ve met Obama and had a crazy twin sister. Because of this fear of dreams I began developing horrible sleep habits. I began to stay up till 3 a.m at 8 years old and I slept in my parents room up till I was 11. Fast forward 8 years and here I am. Bad habits turned me into thinking I could run off 2 hours of sleep every night. And while I tried to correct them using this blog, it is true that old habits die hard. And while trying to kill and rebuild my habits, I have picked up a few things that personally help me.
CBD
A while back I wrote a separate post on this but decided to keep it in my drafts due to fear of maybe backlash, but if enough people are interested I can definitely post my experience with it. Unlike THC, CBD does not hold any hallucinogenic effects and only stays in your system for about 2-5 days. Cbd comes in many forms as well and I normally take it in a gummy form. While melatonin is great for sleep, it made my live action dreams even more intense. I found with CBD I was more relaxed then sleepy. I think when we are relaxed, we tend to fall into more peaceful sleeps which definitely makes a difference.
Bluelight Glasses
I talked briefly about blue light and how harmful it in a past blog post≥ I decided to order a $13 pair from amazon and this is a purchase I didn’t know I needed till I got it. I a lot of my headaches went away and especially during this time of online school and quarantine, I’m sure I can speak for everyone when I say my screen time is through the roof.
Lastly, Yoga & Meditation
For me, I was very sketchy about yoga just because of pre-existing beliefs I had. But one day I buckled down and did some research and I dipped my toes into yoga. At first I was bored because it truly feels like you are just posing. But that’s also where the revelation came that the boredom was purposeful in a sense. It is a time to unwind and relax, a time to meditate. And I try to normally do yoga in the mornings just to start off on a good note and just set the tone for the day. There’s a lot of meditation apps that can guide you through this process and free videos on YouTube including one of my favorites which will be linked below.
So I guess this concludes my passion blogs, hope you guys enjoyed & stay safe!
