Wealthy Clubs

In some rather startling news from today, Real Madrid has overtaken Manchester United as the most valuable sports franchise in the world. At $3.3 billion, Real Madrid narrowly edged out Manchester United, which is valued at $3.15 billion. For comparison to some American sports, this is over three times the value of any NBA team, and the highest ranked American sports team is the Dallas Cowboys at $2.1 billion, over a billion dollars less than the top two teams. This really just shows, in my humble opinion, just how important soccer is in the world despite many Americans disliking or bashing the sport. In fact, soccer is now one of the top three attended sports in the country after football and baseball after the 2000s have seen such a dramatic growth in the popularity of Major League Soccer and international football.

In Champions League news, Barcelona and Real Madrid have managed to avoid each other in the semifinals, potentially setting up a goliath affair of the two Spanish titans in the final to be held at Wembley stadium in London, England. However, both will have tough tests, as Barcelona must face off against last years runners-up Bayern Munich who have already secured the German Bundesliga title. Real Madrid will face another German club in Borussia Dortmund, winner of the past two Bundesliga titles. Although not necessarily a sign of decline of English football, the fact that only Spanish and German club teams have reached the Champions League finals sends a message to the rest of Europe and also bodes well for the nations’ respective national sides. With that, I am officially done with this blog for the semester! I hope you guys have enjoyed everything and have a great summer!

Kids Supporting Gay Marriage

As proceedings on the legality of same-sex marriages have come to a close in the Supreme Court, an interesting phenomenon has been observed: children sending letters of support for same-sex marriage to the Supreme Court. With an impending ruling due sometime in the month of June, these kids could have a strong sway on the decisions of the justices. Many of these kids are the children of same-sex parents who are trying to express to the justices that they have had a normal upbringing and that they are not emotionally damaged due to their familial situation. Other kids are even uploading videos to youtube and spreading awareness and their beliefs through social media and other campaigns. An article on the Huffington post poses the question, one that I think is valid, is what sort of impact will these kids have on the ultimate decision of the supreme court? They are the future, all six million children in the United States today, so in theory the court should listen to their beliefs. Over 70% of youths support same-sex marriage according to the article. However, the real question is will they? Check out this video from a 19 year-old named Zach Wahls who testified in the Iowa House of Representatives, trying to get the message across that the fact that he has lesbian mothers has had no detrimental impact on his life.

This movement comes on the back of the Republican National Committee unanimously announcing approving a resolution that will be sent to the Supreme Court denouncing gay marriage and urging for an upholding of Proposition 8 in California. I think that we are all anxiously awaiting the courts decision because it could seriously make or break the lives of millions of gay Americans and their family members (yes millions, as a recent study showed that one in thirty-four Americans is gay). Although there is a good deal of confidence in the minds of many same-sex supporters, I am wondering what you guys think the results will be. Will the court legalize same-sex marriage? Will they rule that they should not have heard the case? Will they ban same-sex marriage? What will the repercussions be? This is a volatile time in America, and the Supreme Court has a life-making decision on its hands.

My e-Portfolio!

I have actually already finished my e-Portfolio using the online website maker weebly.com. Ideally, my portfolio will be useful as a tool for applications and professional development in the future. Because of this, I use a tone that is professional yet also fun so as to not be too boring. I have to get them to read through the website even if it is going to be serious.

As for the actual design of the website, I have used a format that uses a plain yellowish color on the sides with pictures on each page. After discussion with Mrs. Babich, I decided to use pictures on almost every page so as to break up any monotonous text that could quickly become exhausting to read through. I also decided to, rather than include the text for each essay on the website itself, simply include the description of the assignment and a file that can be downloaded containing the paper.

Finally, I chose to include five works from English that I am proud of as well as one from Microbiology and one from Chemistry. I am a science major so that I feel that these works represent me well. Please check out my website below and provide any critiques!

Change in Racism Policy?

This week in Europe has produced nothing too incredibly exciting. Manchester United lost to Manchester City in the premier league (unfortunately), although that seems unlikely to change the outcome of the premier league as Manchester United still hold a 12 point advantage over City with only seven games remaining.

In the Champions League, Barcelona played out a thrilling 1-1 draw with PSG at the Nou camp to progress to the semifinals on the away goals rule, joining Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund and Real Madrid. This year, with two German sides and two Spanish sides, should certainly be interesting and could potentially setup a rather star-studded final. Messi had to come in to Barcelona’s game in the 62nd minute to rescue the Catalan side who had fallen behind to an early goal from Javier Pastore. He did so quickly, setting up Pedro for a finish and ensuring that Barcelona progressed. This just showed, contrary to what many people think, that Barcelona relies on Messi rather heavily to be their talisman and leader in these tight situations, and he fails to disappoint very often.

The only other really interesting news for the week is that UEFA is mulling over a possible rule change that would see players handed 10-match bans for racism. If you’ll remember, Luis Suarez received a six match ban for his racist actions while John Terry only received a four match ban, so this would clearly be a rather drastic change and shows just how seriously (as they should) UEFA is taking racism in the game.

An Interesting Trend in Support

With the legality of Proposition eight and DOMA coming before the Supreme Court last week, there has been a surge in the number of politicians and individuals who publicly support gay marriage. The first huge victory for the supporters of gay marriage came in the form of Senator Rob Portman announcing that he supports gay marriage, becoming the first Republican in the Senate to do so. Senator Bob Casey from Pennsylvania quickly followed this by announcing his support for the measure, reducing the number of democrats who have yet to endorse same sex marriage to seven. And then yesterday, Senator Mark Kirk of Illinois became the second Republican to support the measure publicly. While this is incredibly relevant and important to the repealing of DOMA and advancement towards equality for the LGBT community, my question is whether or not these announcements are either too late or simply bandwagon decisions.

In the case of Rob Portman, his son is gay and thus he supports the measure, but it is unfortunate that he did not make his decision public earlier. I do not want to belittle the decisions of these individuals as their support is obviously important, but is it a little too timely? Even individuals such as the incredibly conservative television host Bill O’Reilly of the FOX News Channel O’Reilly Factor have admitted that there is not a good argument against gay marriage other than to slap the bible and keep preaching that it is against the word of god to support homosexuality in any form. Obviously it is hard to disagree when people are arguing that they are humans and American simply seeking equal rights. If these politicians are only feeling comfortable now in coming out with their support, are they simply seeking political stability as the obvious political trend is towards gay marriage legalization?

I guess it will be interesting to see if we will see more and more “closet” supporters “come out” and renounce their opposition to gay marriage. Again, I am in no way belittling their support because it is incredibly important, but it is rather unfortunate it did not come out sooner, just as Ken Mehlman, the former political advisor and campaign director to the Bush White House, did not come out until after he could have enacted real change. Do you think that we will see a rush in support for gay marriage among conservatives now? Also, do you think that it will become almost necessary to support gay marriage to be elected to congress? Just some thoughts.

Advocacy Plans

For my advocacy project, I have decided that I will be making a sort of commercial or informational video that could be seen as an advertisement calling ordinary citizens to action to support universal healthcare. After talking to Mrs. Babich, I may direct my video towards the local Village retirement community in State College, as they have a huge interest in the issue due to lots of medications and the seemingly eventual cancellation of Medicare. I have not yet decided if the video will be funny, as in with no universal health care we can all die or become doctors or something silly, or if I should be serious (I should probably be serious). At the end of the video I will tell them how to contact our local representative (Glenn Thompson), and advocate that they try to change his views on universal healthcare as he does not support the idea. For this I will provide his contact information and address if I can obtain it. I feel that a video will be the best way to get my message across because it requires little interaction other than watching and it will tell them exactly how they can go about talking to Glenn Thompson and other district representatives who can enact real change for our community. I may even try and throw in some statistics at some point about the number of uninsured individuals in the greater State College community.

Victory at the Azteca = A Draw

How could I not start off this week with perhaps one of the biggest results in United States history? Last week, the United States played Mexico at their stadium fortress known as the Azteca, where the United States has only ever managed to secure one point during qualifying for the World Cup. Nobody expected us to do anything. After 90 minutes of intense play with some missed penalty calls probably, the United States came out improbably with 0-0 draw that means we now sit in third place in world cup qualifying, having already finished one of our hardest matches. We have also played two away games already and have a streak of two at home coming up that should see us secure some vital points. For those of you who don’t know, in order to qualify for the world cup out of North America (CONCACAF), you have to finish in the top three of a group of six after home and away matches against each team. The fourth placed team faces New Zealand in a home and away series to see who will get the final spot. So with this current record of four points, hopefully we will qualify and get to Brazil in 2014!

In the rest of Europe, nothing too exciting has happened. Manchester United is still fifteen points ahead of Manchester City with only eight games remaining, so it appears as if they have the title locked up. In the Champions League, Barcelona drew with PSG of France 2-2, and Messi has now scored against every team in La Liga in CONSECUTIVE games, which is a truly incredible feat. That’s really all that I have for you guys, but stay tuned for more!

Advocacy Project Ideas

For the advocacy project, I am considering going in several different directions. The first idea would be a movie or commercial supporting universal healthcare (oh, did I mention that I changed my topic?). I am pretty committed to this one because I think that would be a good project and would certainly get the point across. Otherwise, I suppose I could do some sort of poster with ideas, but I think at the end of the day I will do a video. It will probably include shocking statistics and some pictures of life without insurance, for effect. We will see!

A Win?

The United States won a qualifier! Maybe… The game, played in Colorado, was feisty from the beginning, but snow in excess of four inches covered the field. Although the United States won 1-0 via a goal from newly promoted captain Clint Dempsey, the Costa Rican Soccer federation lodged a complaint to FIFA shortly after the conclusion of the game. During the 55th minute of the game, play was stopped and the El Salvadorian referee consulted with both coaches to determine if play should continue. While the Costa Rican coach pushed for the game to be suspended (figures as they were losing), Jürgen Klinsmann pushed for the game to continue, and so it did. However, the Costa Ricans, despite the playing conditions being equal, feel that the game should be replayed. I will let you know what happens, but as the United States now sits in second place in CONCACAF world cup qualifying standings, I certainly hope that they don’t replay the match!

In other news from the week of football action, European world cup qualifying continued, with an eight to zero drubbing of San Marino by England and a draw for Spain with a rather lowly Finnish side. That means that France is now in first place in their group with Spain for qualifying, although the top team automatically moves on and the second team goes into a playoff, so it should not matter too much. As more football news should be available next week, I will be sure to keep you guys updated!

A Sad End For Michael Owen

Manchester United have increased their lead atop the premier league to an astonishing 15 points with only nine games left to go. To bring that into perspective, as long as United win four of their final five games, they are more or less guaranteed an incredible 20th premier league title. In reality, second placed Manchester City is not likely to win all nine of their remaining games, meaning that United should in fact only need to win two or three games to clinch the title. Compared to last year, this is an incredibly comfortable lead for the Red Devils that will allow them to focus on the FA Cup and staying healthy. As for Roberto Mancini at Manchester City, he is in the hot seat as another failed Europe campaign has already smarted. Compounded with a poor second place finish could see the Italian leave Manchester at the end of the season.

In other news this week, former English talisman and prodigy Michael Owen is set to retire at the end of the season after four or five years plagued by injury. Owen, who starred at Euro 2000 and won the Ballon d’Or in 2001 while at Liverpool, has struggled in recent years, being picked up for free by Manchester United a few years back only to be released and picked up by Stoke City this season. However, continuing with his streak of disappointments, Owen has failed to recapture his best form, and at the age of 33, he will be calling it quits. For all of you who are not too familiar with European football, Owen was truly one of the greats at his height, competing with the likes of Ronaldo and Zidane for the title of best player in the world, and David Beckham for best Englishman. A sad day indeed.
