Kids Supporting Gay Marriage

As proceedings on the legality of same-sex marriages have come to a close in the Supreme Court, an interesting phenomenon has been observed: children sending letters of support for same-sex marriage to the Supreme Court. With an impending ruling due sometime in the month of June, these kids could have a strong sway on the decisions of the justices. Many of these kids are the children of same-sex parents who are trying to express to the justices that they have had a normal upbringing and that they are not emotionally damaged due to their familial situation. Other kids are even uploading videos to youtube and spreading awareness and their beliefs through social media and other campaigns. An article on the Huffington post poses the question, one that I think is valid, is what sort of impact will these kids have on the ultimate decision of the supreme court? They are the future, all six million children in the United States today, so in theory the court should listen to their beliefs. Over 70% of youths support same-sex marriage according to the article. However, the real question is will they? Check out this video from a 19 year-old named Zach Wahls who testified in the Iowa House of Representatives, trying to get the message across that the fact that he has lesbian mothers has had no detrimental impact on his life.

This movement comes on the back of the Republican National Committee unanimously announcing approving a resolution that will be sent to the Supreme Court denouncing gay marriage and urging for an upholding of Proposition 8 in California. I think that we are all anxiously awaiting the courts decision because it could seriously make or break the lives of millions of gay Americans and their family members (yes millions, as a recent study showed that one in thirty-four Americans is gay). Although there is a good deal of confidence in the minds of many same-sex supporters, I am wondering what you guys think the results will be. Will the court legalize same-sex marriage? Will they rule that they should not have heard the case? Will they ban same-sex marriage? What will the repercussions be? This is a volatile time in America, and the Supreme Court has a life-making decision on its hands.

I strongly believe the upcoming generation will be the tipping point as the Baby Boomer generation will begin to be moved out of the picture. I’m sure they can help us get some leverage!

You’re so right, Josh. The kids of gay parents are the ones really affected by this and if they support it, why shouldn’t everyone else? I’d love to see more and more kids speaking out!

That video that you attached is super powerful and another great representation of people coming out to speak and further the cause. I love that we have gotten to the point where kids of gay parents are actually old enough to speak on their behalf.
