HAIR CAIR

In my last post, I briefly touched on using coconut oil on my hair. This week, I hope to provide other tips about how I maintain my hair. I should mention, though, my hair is somewhat thick, very straight, dark, and gets greasy quickly. If your hair is not similar, some of these tips may not be of use, but it’s worth a shot! 🙂

The rule I live by: NEVER use heat on your hair (unless for a special occasion)…

When I was younger, I use to blow dry and straighten my hair everyday before school for no reason. It wasted my time and ruined my hair. When I did this, I would notice I got split ends quickly, and it felt super course. Also, it would make my hair frizzy and dry, which I did not have problems with otherwise. Image result for moroccanoil moroccan treatment

Instead, when it’s wet now, I let it air dry or dry it with a towel; microfiber towels are the best. I have been doing this for the last five years or so, and it makes such a difference. If you do need it to dry quickly, I recommend using a cool setting on the blowdryer.

For people like my sister, with natural wavy/curly hair and never straightening it is not an option, there are plenty of serums and sprays that do something very similar and do not destroy your hair. I like:

  • Bed Head Straightening Cream, Straighten Out
  • Paul Mitchell Straight Works
  • Moroccan Oil, Moroccan Treatment (smells so good!!)

(I am sure all can be purchased on Amazon or in a hair salon.) But if you still feel the need to straighten it,
definitely apply a protective serum beforehand.

However, just about every day for as long as I can remember, I have shampooed and conditioned my hair… I think it’s just about how much. I only use about the size of a quarter for each and it does it’s job. I have only run into problems when I apply too much, making it either become too rigid or too greasy, but I have never run into any problems with how frequently I wash it, especially in the summer when I am in the ocean or a pool all day.

Coloring and cutting: I like to both bleach my hair and get it trimmed often. When bleaching for highlights, ombre, etc., it’s important to moisturize/condition a little more than normal for a week or so after and not to do it too often or else the hair will dry out and get thinner. Also, I’ve learned the hard way that sometimes you have to pay a lot for this to make sure it’s done properly. However, I do not apply this mentality to cutting it (usually I just get a straight cut). I cannot remember the last time I got my hair cut at an actual salon. I only really trust my friend to do it because it’s easier to communicate to her what I want and it’s free because I will cut her hair in return! I don’t necessarily recommend this, but if you have the proper materials and you can trust your friend, go for it!

In the end, hair grows back, so it’s not worth stressing about it!

Thanks for reading my hair cair tips! Stay healthie!
