Utilizing Feed Management Software

Feed management software has played a crucial role in the way farms are managing their largest expense. One of the primary advantages of feed management software is the accurate tracking feed costs. Feed costs are the biggest expense on a dairy, so small changes can play a big role in the bottom line. Because feed represents such a significant portion of operating costs, any wastage or inefficiency can be financial drain. Feed management software helps farmers track feed inventory, monitor consumption, and reduce wastage by providing data generated by the software. Traditional record-keeping methods are time-consuming and prone to human errors. Dairy farm feed management software automates the process of recording and tracking feeding data. This includes information on the types and quantities of feed given to each animal, feeding schedules, and any adjustments made based on individual needs. The software also tracks operator accuracy and consistency.

Automated Milking Systems for Small Farms

Dairy farms are going through a transformation with the accessibility of automated milking systems. While traditionally associated with larger operations, these systems are finding their way onto smaller dairy farms as well. Automated milking systems bring a significant boost in efficiency to small farms by automating the milking process. This not only reduces the physical labor required but also allows for increased flexibility in farm management. Small family farms may have the manpower to be able to leave the farm for an evening or weekend. So, with the implementation of milking robots, labor can be much more flexible. Automation also contributes to enhanced animal welfare on small farms. The system allows for cows to choose when they want to be milked. This can positively impact milk production and the overall health of the herd.            New robotic milking system from DeLaval - Agriland.ie

One of the advantages of automated milking systems is the data they provide. These systems collect information on milk yield, milking frequency, and cow health indicators. Small farm owners can use this data for informed decision-making, monitor individual cow performance, and detect health issues at an early stage. Automated milking systems contribute to improved milk quality on small farms. The technology ensures a consistent milking process. The automated monitoring of each cow’s udder health further enhances the quality of the milk produced. For small farms looking to expand without a large increase in labor, automated milking systems offer a viable solution. These systems allow farmers to scale up their operations more efficiently, focusing on herd management.

How automated milking systems (AMS) ensure productivity, and animal welfare

As technology continues to advance, automated milking systems are proving to be a game-changer for small-scale dairy farmers. Beside the benefits of increased efficiency and labor savings, these systems contribute to improved animal welfare. As these systems become more cost effective to install and maintain, I think there will be a continued push towards automation.

Using Activity Monitors to Improve Herd Health

Implementation

Activity monitors are becoming increasingly popular on dairy farms for good reasons. The technology available today is far ahead of what these systems started out as. Several different companies make systems that go on the cows as a collar or an ear tag and track her activity. One of the primary benefits of activity monitoring systems is the early detection of health issues in dairy cows. Changes in activity levels like reduced movement or odd eating patterns, can be indicate health problems. By identifying these issues early on, farmers can intervene faster, likely before the cow even really looks sick.

Monitoring cow activity is essential in optimizing reproductive performance. These systems can detect small changes in behavior associated with estrus, allowing farmers to find the best time for artificial insemination. Improved chances of successful pregnancies leads to a more productive and economically viable operation. Cow activity monitoring systems also contribute to more efficient feed management. By tracking rumination patterns, farmers can have insight into the digestive health of their cows. Changes in rumination can indicate issues with the diet or feed delivery, allowing farms to make changes before production drops. The information provided by these monitoring systems allows for a more customizable approach to herd management. Each cow’s activity profile is unique, allowing farmers to tailor care and attention to individual needs.

Labor Efficiency

Cow activity monitoring systems also offer the advantage of reducing labor intensity on the farm. Automatic data collection and analysis save farmers time that can be redirected towards other areas farm management. This efficiency allows for better allocation of labor and takes less time from the cows to do daily tasks like health monitoring. Every operation knows that healthy cows are the most profitable cows. While these systems can seem like a large capital investment, they do pay for themselves rapidly.

How to Write for the Internet has a lot of quality information on effective internet communication. I think the most important thing to remember is in the first paragraph. The fact of the matter is that people skim content online with limited attention. They do not necessarily want to search for information but will take what they can find easily. With so much content available at our fingertips, attention is limited so you must find a way to grab it.

Appearance and big points play a big role in how much attention something gets. If it is visually attractive with easy-to-read big points, it is much more likely to get attention. I think they also make a good point about being able to connect to the reader. When the reader feels like they are being spoken to about something they can understand and enjoy. I think the point that formal text or wordy sentences should be avoided if the circumstances allow. Formal text takes longer to read and does invite itself for easy reading.

Format also plays a big role. Short paragraphs with important points being bulleted or listed makes a piece of writing much more visually appealing. This is especially true for writing that is sending out important information. The reader does not want to dig through a wordy paragraph trying to decipher what could have been said in a few bullet points.

Visuals also help a lot; I know I would rather read something with visuals than without. Visuals are especially helpful in non-fiction writing like a research article or scientific journal. It allows the reader to help put a picture to the idea. Another big piece of visuals is the fact that they are simply attention grabbing. In a world where attention is limited, small changes in writing make a big difference.

I have been in several situations in phone interviews where I felt like I took far too long to respond to the question. For example, I had a phone interview last month where I was asked to give them four words that well described my character. When I heard that question I froze, typically I prepare myself for questions they might ask in regard to my qualifications for the job. It took what felt like an eternity for me to answer the question, and it bothered me the rest of the interview. However, I was glad that it was a phone interview, because had it been in person, I would have had a difficult time hiding my uncomfortable body language. After that phone interview I definitely would have liked to be able to speed up my answer to that question. I did get a second interview so that eased my worries about the first interview, but it still bothers me. For future interviews, I will practice more personal questions for sure. Those kinds of questions are the ones I struggle with the most.

I think thank you letters are a great follow up to interviews. I have always sent a follow up thank you email but the letters are an even better idea. A handwritten letter is much more personal than an email. The article points out that thank you emails are read every day for business, but the handwritten letters sent in the mail get kept. This will probably become even more relevant as time goes on and society is pushed to doing more and more business digitally. I will definitely keep this in mind going forward. In a situation where there may not be much that separates the candidates for a job, it could mean the difference between getting hired and not getting hired.

How to Write with Flair was extremely helpful in improving my writing, especially on shorter pieces like the blog posts. It has given me the ability to better convey my message even in small amounts. Chapter one was great with helping me to realize how influential verb choices can be. It may seem like a small piece in writing, but verb choices set the tone and captivate the audience. Strong verbs separate bad writing from quality writing.  Audiences decide very quickly if they are going to pay attention to what you have to say, so you better pull the listener in. Brevity and clarity are two aspects that I always try to incorporate in my writing. Growing up, I always heard my dad say “this could have been sent in an email” about a business call or meeting he had attended. Now that I am older, I fully understand what he meant. When people drag meetings and similar events out, I become frustrated that my time is being wasted.

10 Essential Tactics to Captivate Your Audience

Chapter two helped me a lot with punctuation choices, and I feel that it ties in well with chapter one. With strong verb choices and properly placed punctuation, it can make a big difference in writing, and I know it has helped mine.  Both chapters offer loads of useful information on making your writing better. 16 Hilarious Memes About the Importance of Grammar and Punctuation.

I would also like to try incorporating some puns and other types of word play in my writing. It is something I have not done before, but I feel would help in connecting to the reader. If writing can be made funny or relatable in the right scenario it makes the piece that much better.  How to Write with Flair was a great tool to improve my writing from many different perspectives. The different methods to improve writing were why I enjoyed it, because it was not just one or two suggestions.

Jack Dorsey’s email about laying twitter employees off gave me mixed feelings. Both about him as a leader and the company as a whole. He starts off by saying that he is going to give it to them straight and without corporate jargon that is unnecessary. However, it seems to me that in the second and third paragraphs he does not relay any useful information but is merely sugarcoating an email that will begin the process of laying over 300 people off. I can appreciate that he was going to compensate those who would be laid off and that he was thankful for their time at twitter.  Stop the sugar coating

I cannot be too critical of Dorsey’s actions because I have never been in his position, but if I had to lay all of those people off, I would have done things a little differently. First of all, I do not think I would have sent an email to the entire company. The first thing that came to mind was uncertainty. With 300 people being only 8% of the company, that means there were a lot of employees wondering if it could be them. I feel that he and the management team should have identified who would laid off and emailed that group or talked to them individually. Emailing the entire company would have people wondering where their next paycheck would come from or how they would pay their bills? To me, it creates unnecessary hysteria.

Crisis: Managing workplace hysteria - The Standard

Something I did like about the email was that he gave a reason for the layoff and a direction where they wanted the company to head. Whether or not it was genuine I don’t know, but at least he gave some sort of explanation for the layoff. I also appreciated that he told them to feel free to reach out with any questions, as he will most likely be bombarded with hundreds if not thousands of emails.

Reading Aloud

Bill Taylor’s opening remarks in the video set the tone for what is he going to say. The video is about making your words memorable, and he begins with an attention-grabbing start. He starts out by talking about how a lot of people are overworked and tired, which I am sure something a lot of those who watched the video can relate to. I think that starting out a piece of writing by being relatable to the audience makes a vast difference in the way you are perceived by the reader or listener. To be memorable a writer has to set themselves apart. In my opinion, the opening lines of a memo or speech are the most important I feel they set the tone for what is about to come. When the tone is set early, it makes me analyze everything said.

I myself am guilty of not giving someone my full attention if am not engaged by what they have to say. If a writer or speaker can make me feel excited or be interested in the topic, I will absorb what they have to say.

From a writer’s perspective, reading aloud not only helps me be sure the piece flows well but also helps me to catch grammatical errors as well. I feel that proofreading aloud is an important part of quality writing. Bill Taylor talks about using data or stories to make writing memorable. When I read something that is research or technical based, data always sticks out to me. If the writer uses a data point that makes me think or surprises me, there is a much better chance I will remember the writing. In personal writing, good stories always draw me in. A good story makes will make me feel like I was there in that particular moment.
