Timeline of Events

  • 1969 – Sandusky gets hired as a football coach at Penn State
  • 1977 – Sandusky founds The Second Mile in State College, PA
  • 1994 – Victim 7 meets Sandusky through Second Mile
  • 1994-95 – Victim 6 meets Sandusky at a Second Mile picnic
  • 1995-96 – Victim 5 meets Sandusky through The Second Mile
  • 1996-97 – Victim 4 meets Sandusky through The Second Mile
  • 1998
    • Victim 6’s mom contacts university police and starts an investigation after her son returns with wet hair- which he reveals was from showering with Sandusky
    • Psychologist Alycia Chambers tells police that Sandusky’s behavior was in line with that of a pedophile. Another psychologist, John Seasock, reported that he found no indication of child abuse.
    • Investigation reveals more than one incident. Sandusky admits to hugging the boy in the shower. Sandusky is interviewed by Jerry Lauro, an investigator of the Pennsylvania Department of Public Welfare, and promises not to shower with children again. The District Attorney of Centre County, Ray Gricar, decides that no criminal charges were warranted.
  • 1999
    • Victim 4 is listed as a member of Sandusky’s family party for the Alamo Bowl.
    • Sandusky retires from his position as a Penn State football coach with “emeritus” status.
  • 2000
    • Sandusky meets Victim 3 through Second Mile. Sandusky invites the victim to events, the gym, and his personal home. At these places Sandusky would engage in inappropriate contact with the victim.
    • James Calhoun, a janitor at Penn State, witnesses Sandusky performing oral sex on a boy, Victim 8, in the showers of the Lasch Football building. Calhoun reports to his supervisor who tells him to whom to report the incident to. Calhoun never reports what he saw to administration.
  • 2001
    • February- Mike McQueary, a Penn State graduate assistant, witnesses Sandusky performing anal intercourse on a boy, Victim 2. He tells his father and is advised to inform Coach Joe Paterno. McQueary  tells  multiple scenarios of the incident. One states that he hears slapping noises in the showers of the Lasch Football Building, then sees a boy, Victim 2, being grabbed back into the showers and Sandusky emerging moments later with a towel on. Another is that he witnessed the act in a mirror and slams a door to notify that someone was there and witnessed. Family friend, Dr. Jonathan Dranov, was present with McQueary’s father when the McQueary relayed the incident to him. Dr. Dranov states that McQueary only heard sexual noises, made eye contact with a young boy, and witnesses Sandusky emerging later.
    • February- McQueary relays his suspicions to Paterno, who in turn tell Atheltic Director Tim Curley of the incident.
    • February- Curley, Spanier, and Schultz meet to discuss the accusations. They decide to have the Department of Public Welfare review the matter.
    • February- Curley emails Schultz and Spanier saying that he has changed his mind and wants to offer Sandusky “professional help” for his problem. Noting that the only blow back would be not reporting it and being vulnerable for that fact.
    • February- Curley and Senior Vice President for Finance and Business, Gary Schultz, call McQueary to a meet with them. He tells them that he witnessed Sandusky sexually assault a child. Curley and Schultz assure him they will investigate. During the trial, Curley reports that McQueary did not make it clear that Sandusky was performing anything sexual but mere “horse play.” These statements were determined to be “false statements” by the grand jury.
    • February- Curley and Schultz prohibit Sandusky from bringing any Second Mile children into the Lasch Building. Curley reports the incident to the executive director of The Second Mile, Jack Raykovitz.
  • 2004
    • Victim 9 begins participating in The Second Mile, where he continues to attend until 2008. Sandusky invites the boy to games, gives him gifts, and invites him to his house where Sandusky sexually assaults the boy in the basement. This continues regularly for years.
  • 2005 – March- Victim 1 meets Sandusky at The Second Mile.
  • 2008-2009
    • Victim 1 stops seeing Sandusky as he enters his first year of Central Valley High School. His mother finds out about the abuse and reports it to the school. The school does not heed her report and does nothing to aid until confronted later. She also reports to the police, launching another investigation by the Pennsylvania attorney general.
  • 2010
    • September- Sandusky retires from his day-to-day involvement with The Second Mile
  • 2011
    • Novemebr 5- Sandusky is arrested on 40 criminal counts and released on $100,000 bail.
    • November 7- Paterno is cleared of investigations by Pennsylvania Attorney General Linda Kelly, but the same is not said of Graham Spanier.
    • November 7- Curley and Schultz surrender to the charges of failing to report the police of complaints against Sandusky, after having stepped down from there positions.
    • November 7- Penn State abruptly cancels Paterno’s regular weekly press conference.
    • November 9- Joe Paterno is fired by the board of trustees after he had declared he would retire at the end of the season. Spanier is also fired.
    • November 11- Penn State holds a candlelight vigil for the victims of Sandusky where several thousand people attend.
    • November 14- Jack Raykovitz steps down from his position of President and CEO of The Second Mile after 28 years.
    • Novemebr 16- Penn State and State College police state that there is no record of McQueary ever reporting the molestation of Victim 2, which counters a claim made by McQueary that he had discussion with both university officials and police about the incident.
    • November 18- The NCAA announces that it will launch an investigation into whether Penn State violated any bilaws by not reporting Sandusky’s molestations.
    • November 18- Leaders of The Second Mile plan to dissolve the charity and transfer its programs to number of nonprofit groups.
    • December 7- Sandusky is arrested and jailed after Victim 9 and 10 come forward and accuse Sandusky of sexually abusing them when participating at The Second Mile.
    • Decmber 13- Sandusky waives his preliminary trial
    • December 16- Curley and Schultz head for trial after a preliminary hearing in Harrisburg. They each face one count of perjury and one count of failing to report for Sandusky’s alleged sexual assaults within Penn State facilities.
    • January 22- Joe Paterno dies after his health quickly deteriorated
  • 2012
    • February 29- Sandusky’s lawyer requests the trial be delayed until mid-July.
    • March 1- Judge denies request for delay
    • May 19- New documents update Sandusky charges
    • June 11- Day 1 of Sandusky trial
    • June 13- McQueary testifies that he witnessed Sandusky having sex with a boy.
    • June 20- Defense of Sandusky comes to rest and Sandusky does not testify.
    • June 22- Sandusky is found guilty on 45 of the 48 criminal counts he was charged with.
    • July 12- Former FBI director, Louis Freeh, releases a 267-page report that blasts Penn State officials. This report has since been marked as more conjecture due to its lack of evidence. Freeh had no interviews with any of the people immediately involved with the scandal, and drew many conclusions from sparse or non-existent evidence.
  • 2014 – September 8- Penn State Football bowl ban is lifted and scholarships restored for the 2015 season.
  • 2015 – January 16- Joe Paterno’s 111 wins restored. Paterno retains the title of college football’s winningest coach.
