There are multiple skills and competencies team facilitators need to enhance when working with virtual team environments.  Engagement of all involved is an area for emphasis due to the nature of virtual meetings.  Encouraging/Requiring elements like having cameras on, posting in the chat, and making it mandatory that each team members talks may be an opportunity.  This can be challenging, and it’s encouraged to utilize separate 1:1 live conversations, email, and direct teams-chat/instant-message for a more personal feel.  Regarding engagement it could also be helpful to share profiles and have each team member verbally introduce themselves during initial meetings.  As a facilitator it may be seen as encouraging to not just ‘jump-into’ meetings when they start however try to treat them as if they were more in person and catch up on personal/professional topics prior to getting down to the work of the meetings.  Setting ground rules for meetings along with keeping teams to a manageable size for sharing virtually could be positive and if groups are large the suggestion could be to break them down to smaller sizes for tasks and then come back together for full team reviews.  Utilizing respect along with making the process as fun as possible are also ways to enhance the virtual team settings.
