Gun Control

With 2016 being an election year, there are many issues being talked about that can affect the support that candidates get. A very big issue that keeps coming up throughout this entire election process is gun control. Both the Democrat party and Republican have very different views on the aspect. In today’s blog, we will discuss each side and the arguments for each.

I will be talking about 4 Republican candidates views on the issues, and 2 Democratic candidates views on the issues. The Republicans are Donald Trump, Marco Rubio, Jeb Bush, and Ted Cruz; the Democrats are Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders.

First, we will begin with Donald Trump’s views. He is a man who is very against gun control. His beliefs are that gun free zones are “targets for sickos”. By this he means that the mentally unstable are likely to attack throughout areas they know no one will be able to fight back. When discussing gun control, he referred back to the recent shootings in Oregon and stated that had someone around the area had a gun, the outcome would have been different. He believes that guns are not the issue, but that they way we deal with mental health in the country is. He believes that our mental health system is broken, and that it is a problem that politicians have ignored for too long. The solution he proposes is to get people who suffer with mental health off the streets before they can terrorize our communities.

Next, we have Marco Rubio. Republican Marco Rubio is too against gun control laws, because he believes that criminals will ignore the laws made due to the fact that they are criminals. He suggests that in order to have strong people we must have strong values, “and you cannot have strong values without strong families.” Rubio believes that there should not be laws on gun control because the people who break the law are the people committing these mass murders, anyway.

Jeb Bush resides in Florida, and uses the fact that the state is pro-gun to support his argument about why there should not be laws restricting guns. He talks about how Obama wants to take away a Constitutional right and that he believes that is not the right approach. He argues that in Florida they have a background check system that allow for only those who pass to be eligible to hold concealed-weapon permits. Bush says that the crime rates in Florida because they have created a great balance.

Ted Cruz has a strange take on gun control. His main argument is that we shouldn’t have laws restricting guns in case of government tyranny. “It is a Constitutional right to protect your children, your family, your home, our lives, and to serve as the ultimate check against governmental tyranny — for the protection of liberty.” He too believes that it is very important to be able to bear arms in order to protect ourselves and the people we care about.

Now, onto the Democrats.

Hillary Clinton makes a case that 33,000 people being killed yearly by gun violence is unacceptable, and I think that we can all agree on that. She supports action to address gun violence. Some of the things she wants to do include conducting background checks and holding gun manufacturers accountable for endangering Americans.

Bernie Sanders acknowledges the fact that gun control is an issue that America is currently facing. He too wants to conduct background checks in order to prevent weapons from getting into the hands of criminals. He also wants to close loop holes that allow private sellers at gun shows and on the internet because that allows for weapons to be sold without background checks.

There you have it, folks, all the candidates views on the issue of gun control that faces today’s society. No matter who wins, there will be inevitable changes coming to America in the aspect of gun laws; so, sit back, grab some popcorn, and relax.
