On the Issues: Immigration

For this blog post, I will be writing on the Civic Issue that is immigration. Not that immigration itself is an issue per say, but the way we oversee it and how to control the immigration going on now is an issue disagreed upon by many politicians.

The two politicians views that I will be talking about in this post are Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton. I chose these two because they are both the candidates that are currently in the lead for their respective parties. rs_634x1024-150616073901-634.Donald-Trump.jl.061615download (6)

First, we will begin with Donald Trump. The only citation that I will be using when referring to Donald Trump is donaldjtrump.com. This is Donald Trump campaigns website where he professionally states his views on all of the issues that we face today as a society. Donald Trump’s view on immigration includes three basic components. First, he states that “a nation with no borders is not a nation at all”. This meaning that he believes that there should be a wall built on the southern border of America, separating Mexico from the United States. He wants to make the Mexican government pay for this wall and believes that it will lower crime rate among the United States. Second he states that “a nation without laws is not a nation at all”. He believes that we should triple the amount of officers that patrol the borders and protect our immigration laws. One solution he proposed is to end birthright citizenship, meaning that all children born in America to illegal immigrants, must be deported. Finally he states that we need more job security for American citizens. He says that the United States is the only country that puts other countries needs in front of our own, and that that needs to change. A proposed solution by Trump is to always hire American workers first. In his campaign he does not specify whether he means natural born citizens, or naturalized citizens or both.

The information I will be citing for Hillary Clinton is from hillaryclinton.com, which is her campaign website. If Hillary becomes president, she plans to pass legislation that will make it easier for humans to be granted citizenship. She disagrees with Donald Trumps plan of ending birthright citizenship, and plans to do everything possible to allow families to stay together. She will support and continue President Obama’s DREAMers program. Although she believes that immigration enforcement is an important issue to be discussed, she plans on doing it in a humane and effective way, deporting first those who pose a violent threat to public safety. She believes that this would allow all immigrants a fair chance to tell their stories. Finally, she plans to promote naturalization of citizenship so families, like mine, can live here in the land of opportunities!

I can see that both candidates seem to prioritize immigration a lot differently. The problem I see with Trump’s mission is that it is going to be very costly, physically and morally. Tripling border security sounds outrageous to me. We need officers patrolling streets and keeping the peace all over, not staring across the Rio Grande 24/7. I can’t imagine what other countries would think of the United States if we started building up walls to our borders. It makes us look cold and undesirable as a nation.

Donald Trump’s immigration plan is truly anti-American. At one point, everyone in this country, except for Native Americans were immigrants (including his wife). I try not to completely despise a candidate and listen holistically to what they have to say, but he really makes it so difficult. Hillary Clinton’s plan is more more moderate and is something I feel more comfortable getting behind! Again, I love these posts because they are incredibility helpful in forming my political view.
