Born in Columbia, Maryland, Christopher Brent Wood began releasing music on the popular platform, SoundCloud, back in 2014. Although his parents were never extremely fond of his pursuit of the life of a musician, he had his eyes on a life in the music industry. His career would take him from to North Carolina to Los Angeles.
Brent Faiyaz released his first single “Allure” in 2015. This track is a smooth R&B groove, with unique 80s synth keys sprinkled throughout the song. This track would set the pace for much of Faiyaz’s style. He often utilizes drowned out bass kicks over dreamy melodies.
While Faiyaz had more impressive singles and collaborations (one of which was his feature on “Crew” by Goldlink, which also featured Shy Glizz and put Faiyaz on the map), his real breakout was his full-length release in 2017, titled Sonder Son. Interestingly enough, the cover art for this album describes the project as a whole. A golden-dusted, simple, and upward looking project that demonstrates the artist’s ability to use simple 2000s-R&B style instrumentals to bring out his smooth voice and timeless sound. “Gang Over Luv” is a good example of this. The melody is in-and-out, often distorted, but layered with gliding hi-hats. Brent’s voice in the background adds character to the vocals, which are incredible even on their own. Faiyaz also plays with the compound track on “First World Problems / Nobody Cares” and “So Far Gone / Fast Life Blues”. On both of these tracks, he shows his audience his ability to switch his flow on a dime, but still deliver impressive sounds.
Some of Faiyaz’s more recent releases include the EP titled Lost, as well as a popular track on TikTok titled “Dead Man Walking”. While these are both solid pieces, his most recent album, titled F**k the World, is an extremely impressive collection of music, arguably some of Faiyaz’s best work. The first attention grabbing track on the album is “Been Away”, an unapologetic explanation for the life that he lives. Again we see the same gliding hi-hats, followed by a drowned out melody in the intro to the song. His layered vocals add soul and smoothness, creating an airy, easy-going track, perfect for a romantic night out. The eponymous track, “F**k the World (Summer in London)” is also a fantastic listen, as the chorus consists of a deep and distorted Faiyaz voice. It slowly builds and then winds down just as slowly. Faiyaz also offers a chopped and screwed version of F**k the World, on which he collaborates with DJ Candlestick.
I like his voice and really enjoy his feature on the Goldlink album, but I don’t enjoy a majority of his most popular songs. I’m not a huge R&B fan and the beats are a bit too laid back for me to enjoy the vocals. I hope he ventures out into more upbeat/vibrant music in the future.
Just took a listen to one of his songs. He sounds pretty good. Faiyaz is definitely on the come-up from what you say, and his music is showing that. One day I will have to refer to these reviews and see if anyone “made it”.
I absolutely love R&B and Brent Faiyaz is one of my favorite artists. I think you accurately described his music with his soulful voice and dreamy melodies. Some of my favorite songs from him are of course “Dead Man Walking,” “Rehab,” “Poison,” and his newest one “Show You Off” is just immaculate. He definitely has a more modern and dynamic take on R&B which is what I love.
